Overview
Zoysia matrella, commonly called Japanese carpet grass or Manila grass, is a warm-season ornamental grass from Japan and Southeast Asia. This grass forms an exceptionally dense, fine carpet resembling an oriental rug.
This grass species isn't suitable for all northern European regions, but where temperatures remain warm (southern areas, protected gardens) it thrives excellently. In front yard designs, it creates a luxurious, lush appearance with minimal maintenance demands.
Appearance and Growth
Zoysia matrella produces very fine, narrow blades (approximately 2-3 millimeters wide) growing densely together. Growth is rhizomatous: new plantlets develop via underground runners. This ensures rapid, dense establishment once established.
In warm climates, Zoysia matrella grows from April through October. Foliage is bright green during the growing season. Winter dormancy turns the grass reddish-brown to brownish-green.
Ideal Location
Position Zoysia matrella in full sun: minimum six to eight hours direct sunlight daily. This grass rejects shade entirely. In complete shade it becomes leggy, thin, and uncertain.
In northern Europe, it won't survive outdoor year-round in most locations. In containers and protected sites (south-facing exposure), it's manageable. For full front yard integration, southern regions are more suitable.
Soil Requirements
Zoysia matrella grows best in reasonably well-draining soil. Standard garden soil with added sand is suitable. pH 5.5-8.5 (broad spectrum) is accepted.
The plant tolerates saline soil, making it useful in coastal proximity. Nutrition needs are moderate; standard fertilization during the growing season suffices.
Watering
Zoysia matrella is reasonably drought-tolerant once established. Water regularly during the first season after planting. Subsequently (year two+), you can reduce frequency significantly.
In front yards, regular natural rainfall may suffice in average years. During extreme heat, weekly watering is beneficial. Prevent waterlogging: avoid excessive moisture.
Mowing
Zoysia matrella grows slower than cool-season grasses and requires less frequent mowing. During the growing season, mow monthly at approximately 2-3 centimeters height. This maintains the dense, carpet-like appearance.
Better yet: allow some areas to grow slightly taller for visual variation. This creates more interesting texture.
Maintenance Calendar
April: Dewatering. Begin mowing when growth is visible. May through September: Regular monthly mowing. Frequent watering during dry spells. October: Stop fertilizing. Gradually reduce mowing frequency. November through March: Reddish-brown/brown grass. No mowing. No fertilization.
Winter Hardiness
Zoysia matrella is not winter hardy in northern Europe. In southern regions it may survive outdoor winter in open ground with good drainage and protection. In containers, extreme caution: prefer indoor storage or heavy protection during winter.
Temperatures below -5 degrees Celsius sustained long-term cause die-off in most cases.
Companion Plants
If maintaining Zoysia matrella in containers, surround with other warm-lovers: dwarf palms, Drosophyllum, Sempervivum. This creates a warm, luxury aesthetic.
Closing
Zoysia matrella suits warm, sunny front yards seeking luxury and low maintenance. The grass feels soft (truly carpet-like!) and appears attractive throughout summer. Most suitable for warm regions, heat-loving households, or container culture.
