Formosa Firethorn (Pyracantha koidzumii) is a striking thorny shrub native to Taiwan, belonging to the Rosaceae (rose) family. This plant typically reaches 3-5 meters tall with similar or slightly lesser spread, making it suitable for hedges, walls, and espalier training. Small white to pale pink flowers appear in April-May in dense clusters along the stems. The true glory comes October-January when the plant is clothed in brilliant orange to red-orange berries that persist well into winter.

Small, glossy dark green leaves provide year-round neat appearance. Dense thorns make the plant highly impenetrable, providing excellent shelter for nesting birds while deterring pests. Birds eagerly consume the berries, especially during scarce winter food periods. In its native Taiwan habitat, this species grows on hillsides and woodland margins where it survives extended dry periods. Once established, Formosa Firethorn exhibits excellent drought tolerance and can thrive in poor soils. This makes it valuable for difficult sites where other shrubs struggle. The white spring flowers attract pollinators and contrast beautifully with the subsequent berry display.

Winter hardiness reaches -10 degrees Celsius in most years, though tender specimens in exposed locations may suffer damage. Pruning immediately after flowering prevents berry formation, so mid-summer pruning is preferred. Propagation from semi-hardwood cuttings in July is reliable. Once established, the plant requires minimal maintenance in full sun locations. Garden centers should recognize this species' value for difficult dry sites and wildlife gardens.
