Overview
Juniperus flaccida, also known as 'Mexican juniper' or 'weeping juniper,' is an elegant conifer from the Cupressaceae family. This plant grows naturally in Southwest Texas through Mexico on dry mountain slopes and plateaus. The characteristic drooping branches give the tree a graceful appearance. It is a valuable specimen for dry, sunny gardens with architectural merit.
Appearance & bloom
Juniperus flaccida grows as an upright tree reaching 8-10 meters tall with an elegantly spreading crown. The needles are very fine, scale-like, grey-green, and strongly aromatic. The most characteristic feature is its elegant drooping twigs, giving it a graceful appearance. The 'berries' are actually cones with blue waxy coating, appearing August-September.
Ideal location
Juniperus flaccida thrives in sunny locations with full exposure. The plant tolerates full sun perfectly and weakens in shade. An open, elevated position is ideal. The plant tolerates strong winds exceptionally well.
Soil
The plant is highly flexible regarding soil, growing in sand, gravel, clay, and stone. Well-draining soil is essential; waterlogging is not tolerated. Neutral to slightly acidic soil is preferred. Poor, infertile soil is no concern.
