Heuchera richardsonii, commonly known as Richardson's alumroot or Richardson's coral bells, is a clump-forming perennial from the saxifrage family (Saxifragaceae), native to subarctic and boreal regions from Alberta and British Columbia south through the northern Great Plains to Minnesota, Wisconsin, and central U.S. states. The plant forms a low, dense mound of attractively lobed and deeply veined foliage, typically 10 to 30 cm in height, with persistent leaves that develop reddish-burgundy tones in cold months. In June through July, the plant sends up slender racemes of pale-pink to rose-purple flowers about 30 to 40 cm tall, attracting hummingbirds and other pollinators. Richardson's alumroot thrives in shade to part-shade (2 to 4 hours of direct sun daily) and prefers moist to moderately moist, well-draining soil rich in organic matter. Extreme winter hardiness extends to USDA zone 2 (c. -40 degrees C), making it ideal for subarctic and continental climates. The plant struggles in heavy clay soils without drainage amendment. Established plants are long-lived and require minimal maintenance beyond occasional watering during drought. Division in early spring or immediately after flowering readily multiplies stock. Propagation from seed is also possible but produces variable results. In landscape design, Richardson's alumroot serves excellently as a groundcover beneath deciduous trees, in woodland gardens, along stream banks and pond margins, in alpine troughs, and as edging for shaded borders. Its refined appearance and generous flowering make it a sophisticated choice for cool-climate shade gardens where most ornamental perennials struggle.
