Overview

Streamside fleabane (Erigeron glabellus) is a charming wildflower from the Asteraceae family. This plant grows naturally in the western parts of Canada and the United States. This is a fascinating choice for gardeners.

The plant blooms with beautiful purple flowers and attracts birds and pollinators. Streamside fleabane is very winter hardy and requires minimal maintenance.

The plant is sometimes called 'smooth fleabane' because it has smooth, hairless leaves. Despite its name referencing mountain streams, it also grows well in normal garden soils.

Appearance and bloom

Streamside fleabane has thin, upright stems with narrow leaves. The plant grows to approximately 30-40 cm height. The leaves are elongated and have a characteristic smooth, fine texture.

The flowers are the highlight of this plant. They appear as beautiful purple to pink flowers with yellow centers. Each flower consists of numerous fine petals that radiate outward. The flowers measure approximately 1-2 cm in diameter.

The flowering period extends from June to August. During this period, the plant is full of attractive flowers. The flowers attract bees and butterflies.

After blooming, small seeds form with characteristic hairiness.

Ideal location

Streamside fleabane grows best in full sun. At least six hours of direct sunlight per day is ideal. The plant can also grow in partial shade but flowers less profusely.

The plant is suitable for mountainous gardens, steep slopes and natural borders. It works well planted in groups with other mountain wildflowers.

Wind is not a problem for this plant. It actually grows better in somewhat windy conditions.

Soil

Streamside fleabane grows best in drier, well-draining soils. The plant prefers no heavy, wet soils. Light, rocky soils are ideal.

Poorer soils are actually better than very fertile grounds. The plant easily adapts to lean soil. This is an advantage in poor soil situations.

The plant cannot tolerate waterlogging well. In heavy soil, drainage must be improved.

A neutral to slightly acidic pH level is ideal.

Watering

Once established, streamside fleabane is very drought tolerant. The plant actually needs no extra water. It can withstand long dry periods.

Young, newly planted specimens need some water until they root well. After the first season, watering can be drastically reduced.

Waterlogging must be avoided. The plant grows better in dry conditions.

Pruning

Streamside fleabane does not need pruning. The plant grows naturally into a compact, attractive shape. Faded flowers can be pinched off to stimulate further blooming.

Remove dead parts of the plant in early spring. This keeps the plant neat and tidy.

The plant can be cut back to about half height after blooming.

Maintenance calendar

Spring: Plant growth begins. Check for winter damage. Remove dead material.

Summer: Plant blooms profusely. Remove faded flowers for more blooms.

Autumn: Blooming gradually stops. Plant prepares for winter.

Winter hardiness

Streamside fleabane is very winter hardy. The plant grows in arctic and subarctic areas of North America and can withstand very cold winters.

In temperate regions, this plant is absolutely winter hardy. It will have no problem with cold winters. It can be used in mountain areas.

Above-ground parts die off in winter, but the roots easily survive the frost. In spring, the plant regrows.
