Overview

Hairy sedge (Carex hirtifolia), also called hairy wood sedge, is an elegant grass-like plant from the Cyperaceae family (sedges), native to eastern North America from Canada through the Carolinas. This rather refined sedge grows in loose clumps of 30-50 cm tall and forms fine, glossy green foliage that is slightly arching. The plant is recognized by its hairy flowers and fruits, hence the name. It is an all-purpose plant for shaded areas and moister soils.

Appearance and Bloom

Carex hirtifolia forms an open, loose tufting growth with thin, elongated foliage approximately 3-4 mm wide, glossy dark green colored. In May through June, discrete flowers appear as small spikes at the top of the plant - not showy but elegant. The fruits have fine hairs (hence hirtifolia) visible under magnification. Garden height is compact: 25-50 cm. Foliage remains green year-round, ensuring winter interest.

Hairy sedge is a shade specialist. Ideal are partial to full shade (north-facing borders, beneath trees, along hedges). In full sun it performs well in cooler climates, but in warmer weather may show some stress. Bleached or damaged foliage may appear with excessive heat/sun.
