Golden star cactus (Mammillaria elongata), also called lace cactus and ladyfinger cactus, is a remarkably decorative cactus from the Cactaceae family. This easy-growing succulent originates from the mountain regions of Guanajuato to Veracruz in Mexico.
Morphology: The plant forms elongated, upright columns reaching 15 to 25 centimeters tall and only 2 to 3 centimeters in diameter. The plant grows in large clusters, with each column reproducing itself through basal shoots. The stem is covered with regular arrangements of tiny bristly tubercles in a dense pattern.
Flowering: Golden star cactus blooms abundantly in spring with small bright yellow flowers produced around the upper portions of the stems. Each flower is only 1 to 1.5 centimeters in diameter, but they are produced in great numbers. The flowers are pleasantly fragrant and remain open for several days.
Cultivation and containers: This cactus is exceptionally easy in pot culture. Use well-draining cactus soil or terrarium mix. Minimum 5 liters per plant. Pot must have excellent drainage holes.
Light requirements: Golden star cactus requires full sun for optimal growth and flowering. Place in direct sunlight 8-10 hours daily. In shade, the plant grows slowly and fails to flower.
Watering: Water sparingly. Water only when soil is completely dry - approximately once every 2-3 weeks during growing season. In winter, water very little. Overwatering is the most common cause of failure.
Temperature and winter rest: Golden star cactus grows best at temperatures of 15-25 degrees Celsius. Keep cooler around 10-12 degrees Celsius in winter to encourage flowering. This cold period activates flower buds.
Fertilizing: Fertilize once in spring with cactus fertilizer. Too much feeding leads to soft growth and poor flowering.
Propagation: Easily propagated from seed or vegetatively by breaking off shoots. Shoots can be directly inserted in dry cactus soil and root easily.
Pests: Mealybugs can occur, especially with excessive moisture. Treat with insecticidal soap. Spider mites also possible in dry environments.
Garden design: Perfect choice for container gardens, cactus displays, and indoor decoration. Combine with other small cacti for striking arrangements. Suitable for office and shop windows.
Varieties: Various forms available - some are crested or comb-forms. Also yellow flower varieties with orange tints.
Winter hardiness: Hardy to USDA zone 9 outdoors. In cooler areas keep permanently indoors.
Natural companions: In nature grows in mountain regions with other cactus species and hardy succulents.
