Overview

Malva trimestris, known as royal mallow or summer mallow, is a cheerful annual from the Mediterranean region. This plant belongs to the family Malvaceae and is prized for its large, showy purple flowers appearing from June to September. Reaching 60 to 100 centimeters tall, it achieves a generous medium height, ideal for borders and background planting.

This is an excellent plant for beginners. It grows quickly from seed, blooms abundantly, and requires minimal maintenance. Perfect for those wanting quick color and volume in their garden.

Appearance and blooming

The leaves of Malva trimestris are green, round to slightly heart-shaped, approximately 5 to 10 centimeters in diameter. They have a rough texture. The stem is green, slightly hairy, and robust.

Flowering is the main attraction. From June to September, large showy flowers appear in purple to mauve tint, approximately 5 to 7 centimeters in diameter. The flowers have five petals and are very open and welcoming to bees. They appear continuously throughout the growing season, providing months of bloom.

Flowers are replaced by decorative seed pods that add interest when blooming declines.

Ideal location

Malva trimestris thrives best in full sun. At least 6 to 8 hours of direct sun daily is essential for good growth and rich flowering. In partial shade it grows but flowers much less abundantly.

The plant is not frost hardy and dies when hard autumn frosts arrive, usually October. This is an annual plant so this is normal.

Soil

Malva trimestris is not very fussy about soil. It grows well in sand, loam, and clay as long as drainage is acceptable. A pH between 6 and 8 is ideal. The plant thrives even on poor soil, although richer soil promotes better growth.

When sowing outdoors, seeds can be scattered directly on prepared soil and lightly raked in.

Watering

Once sprouted, young plants are fairly drought tolerant. Water regularly in the first 3 to 4 weeks after sprouting until the plant is well established. Once mature, water can be limited to occasional watering only in very dry periods.

Excessive water promotes foliage at the expense of flowers, so moist soil is better than too much water.

Pruning

Pruning is not needed and usually not beneficial. However, removing spent flowers (deadheading) can maintain blooming by stimulating new flowers.

If the plant becomes straggly, gentle pinching in July can help restore shape.

Maintenance calendar

April to May: Sow seeds, keep moisture levels high until sprouting. June: Thin young plants to 30 centimeters apart, first watering. July to August: Water during dry spells, enjoy blooming, deadhead spent flowers. September: Feeding can be given, blooming will continue. October: Plant dies with first frost, this is normal for annual.

Frost sensitivity

Malva trimestris is very frost sensitive and dies with first autumn frosts, usually October or even September in harsher areas. This is perfectly normal because it is an annual. In warm spring, later sowing can still provide adequate blooming before first frost.

Companion plants

Royal mallow pairs beautifully with:

  • Sunflowers for yellow contrast
  • Cosmos for airy flowers
  • Lavender for scent
  • Salvia for blue tones
  • Coreopsis for yellow underlay
  • Heliotropium for evening fragrance

Placed in borders as backdrop for lower-growing flowering plants.

Final thoughts

Malva trimestris is a wonderful annual for those wanting quick color and volume in their garden. Easy from seed, very freely flowering, and virtually maintenance-free. It deserves much wider use in Dutch gardens.

Intratuin and Gamma regularly sell seed and also grown plants in early summer. Plant in full sun and enjoy months of purple blooming. Your garden will definitely shine with this cheerful summer bloomer!
