Overview

Attalea phalerata, commonly known as the Urucuri palm or Acuri palm, is an impressive mid-sized palm native to the tropical rainforests of South America, with occurrences in Colombia, Bolivia, Peru, and Brazil. This is a stately, elegant palm suited to warm, humid climates and large interiors. The plant is known for its graceful fronds and sturdy, upright trunk.

The Urucuri palm is a fascinating choice for tropical plant enthusiasts. With proper growing conditions, this palm provides years of growth and beauty, even in less-than-ideal household settings.

Appearance and Bloom

The Urucuri palm becomes a mid-sized palm reaching 5 to 15 meters in its natural habitat, though in container culture it usually remains much shorter (1 to 3 meters). The trunk is smooth and gray-green. The leaves are large, feather-shaped and can reach 2 to 3 meters in length.

The leaves have an elegant, drooping growth pattern that requires substantial space. Very small, inconspicuous flowers appear only under ideal conditions and produce small orange-to-brown fruits. The fruits emit an unpleasant odor when ripening.

Ideal Location

The Urucuri palm grows best in very bright, filtered light. A location near a large window with north or east exposure works well. Avoid direct, scorching afternoon sun that may burn fronds, though morning sun is welcome.

The plant can grow in an atrium with indirect filtered light sources. Consistent bright environment is better than fluctuating light and darkness.

Soil Composition

The Urucuri palm prefers loose, well-draining potting soil. A mixture of quality palm/tropical potting mix, coconut fiber, and perlite or pine bark ensures good drainage. pH should be neutral to slightly acidic (6.0 to 7.0).

Add organic compost to improve humus content. This palm is a nutrient-hungry plant and responds well to moderate feeding during the growing season.

Watering

Watering must be consistent and careful. The plant enjoys moist soil but not waterlogged conditions. Check weekly and water when the top 2-3 cm feels dry. More water may be needed in warmer seasons.

Ensure excellent drainage - never leave the pot sitting in water. In winter, reduce watering as growth slows. The plant is sensitive to excessive moisture, which can cause root rot.

Pruning and Maintenance

Minimal pruning is needed. Remove only dead or yellowing fronds at the base. Always use clean pruning tools. Allow healthy fronds to grow and spread - they form the plant's natural elegance.

Carefully remove dead leaf stems, but never cut into the healthy trunk.

Maintenance Calendar

  • Spring (April-May): Resume regular watering; begin moderate feeding
  • Summer (June-August): High water; fertilize every 2 weeks; protect from scorching sun
  • Fall (September-October): Gradually reduce watering; fertilize every 3 weeks
  • Winter (November-March): Minimal water; no feeding required

Winter Hardiness

The Urucuri palm is absolutely not cold-hardy. The plant cannot tolerate temperatures below 15 degrees Celsius. The ideal temperature range is 18 to 28 degrees Celsius. In Dutch homes, this palm must remain indoors year-round and be protected from drafts.

Avoid cold windows and hot radiators near the plant.

Companion Plants

The Urucuri palm works well with other tropical plants in a large, warm space:

  • Philodendrons
  • Anthuriums
  • Monsteras
  • Ficus lyrata
  • Zamioculcas zamiifolia

Together they create a tropical paradise feeling.

Closing

The Urucuri palm is a stunning, stately choice for gardeners with warm, bright, humid indoor environments. Though this palm grows larger than most houseplants, the sight of this elegant tropical specimen rewards the effort. With dedication to proper conditions, this palm will provide years of growth and beauty.
