Why peonies must be the heart of a season-long border

Peonies bloom two weeks (May-June) and are then irresistible: massive, full, fragrant. After: quiet. Many gardens see peonies as 'just nice in May'. But here's the secret: peonies grow massive, structure-rich leaves that stay interesting all summer.

This is the opportunity. Plant peonies for full sun + moist soil + underplanting, and you have a border that's active May to October.

Combo 1: The classic peony + tulips + summer bloom

Paeonia 'Sarah Bernhardt' (deep pink, 80 cm, May-June) with Tulipa 'Angelique' (pink double, April-May, 50 cm) in front and Delphinium 'Pacific' (dark blue, June-July, 150 cm) behind.

Add Alchemilla mollis (yellow-green foliage, yellow florets, 45 cm) and Salvia nemorosa (lilac, May-September, 60 cm). Now you have: April (tulip), May (peony), June-July (delphiniums), all summer (alchemilla and salvia).

Combo 2: The red rose-peony mix

Paeonia 'Karl Rosenfield' (deep red, 80 cm, May-June) with Rosa 'William Shakespeare' (red, June-October, 100 cm) behind.

In front: Helleborus niger (white, December-March, 45 cm), Muscari 'Blue Magic' (blue bulb, April-May, 20 cm) and Heuchera 'Palace Purple' (purple foliage, 30 cm).

This is winter (hellebore), spring (muscari), May-June (peony) and summer to autumn (rose). Four seasons in one border.

Combo 3: The pastel-peony variant

Paeonia 'Coral Sunset' (coral-pink, 70 cm, May-June), Paeonia 'Sorbet' (cream-pink bicolour, 70 cm, May-June) and Paeonia 'Bowl of Beauty' (pink-white, 80 cm, May-June).

In front: Allium karataviense (purple bulb, April, 30 cm), Aquilegia 'Nora Barlow' (purple-white double, May-June, 60 cm) and Lupinus 'Gallery Pink' (pink lupine, June-July, 60 cm).

This is pure harmony: all pink, purple, white tones. Entire spring and early summer.

Combo 4: The structure variant

Paeonia officinalis 'Rubra Plena' (double red, 60 cm, May) with Dicentra spectabilis (bleeding heart, white or pink, May, 80 cm) and Heuchera 'Obsidian' (dark foliage, white flower, 30 cm).

Add Astilbe 'Red Sentinel' (red-purple plume, June-July, 80 cm) at the back. This is more leaves and textures than flowers. Structure all summer.

Why peonies work so well for season-long borders

Dual function. Bloom: two weeks May-June. Foliage: interesting all summer, no other plant gives so much green mass.

Deep roots. Peonies root deep, don't compete for water with underplanting. Perfect for multi-layer design.

No transplanting needed. Once planted, peonies can stand in one spot for 50+ years. This is investment.

Companion plants get room. Hellebores, tulips, aquilegia, lupines — they can do their thing and fade when peony explodes.

Design tips

Don't crowd peonies. They grow large. Minimum 100 cm apart.

Add summer bloomers. Peonies alone = May gap. Delphiniums, asters, salvias fill summer void.

Don't cut back in autumn. Peony foliage gives structure all winter. Only cut March, right back to ground.

Water first three years. Years four+: deep roots grow without irrigation.

Care

March: cut peony foliage back. April: water and compost. May: bloom and enjoy. June-September: deadhead companion flowers, water dry spells. October: leave peony foliage. November: no maintenance. March next year: repeat.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't my peony bloom?

Usually: too little sun (needs minimum 5 hours). Or: planted too deep (crown barely below soil). Or: first three years: patience needed.

Can I prune peonies?

After bloom: yes, remove spent flowers. During growth: no. In autumn: no (you remove next season bloom). March: yes, right back.

How long until a peony is full?

Year one: modest bloom. Years two-three: better. Year four+: full splendour. Some peonies hit peak bloom only year ten.

Can I transplant peonies?

Yes, but they prefer to stay put. Transplanting: depth very carefully, entire root ball. They grow better if they stay in one spot for years.
