The French formal garden: classical elegance through strict geometry

A French formal garden is not merely symmetrical - it is geometry elevated to art. Every plant, every path, every element occupies a precise place. No chance, no wild growth. This is intention made plant-shaped. Beauty lies in order, and the order makes it even more beautiful.

The classical French formal garden works with four core principles: bilateral symmetry (left = right), clean ground lines (rectangles, circles, lattices), compact ornamental conifers (boxwood, holly, Lonicera nitida) and formal aesthetic value over unruly growth.

The boxwood problem and modern alternatives

Boxwood (Buxus sempervirens) is the classical choice. Fine to prune, evergreen, elegant. Yet since 2000 boxwood has been plagued by two scourges: boxwood moth (Cydalima perspectalis) eats the plant from inside, and boxwood blight (Calonectria pseudonaviculata) does similar damage. In many regions boxwood hedges have vanished or weakened.

Five worthy alternatives:

1. Lonicera nitida 'Maigrün' (Japanese privet)

  • Height: to 150 cm (easily prunable)
  • Leaf: tiny, green, far more refined than boxwood
  • Pruning: excellent - holds shape effortlessly
  • Advantage: resistant to moth and blight

2. Ilex crenata 'Green Hedge' (Japanese holly)

  • Height: to 200 cm
  • Leaf: glossy dark green, even finer than boxwood
  • Growth: slow (patience required)
  • Advantage: toxic to pest insects, extremely durable

3. Prunus lusitanica (Portuguese laurel)

  • Height: to 600 cm (prunable to 200 cm)
  • Leaf: larger than boxwood but elegant
  • Growth: faster than holly, evergreen
  • Advantage: robust, very disease-resistant

4. Taxus baccata 'Fastigiata' (Green yew hedge)

  • Height: to 300 cm
  • Leaf: needle-like, dark green, classical
  • Pruning: excellent
  • Advantage: extremely toxic to insects, very long-lived

5. Euonymus japonicus (Japanese spindle)

  • Height: to 150 cm
  • Leaf: glossy green, evergreen
  • Growth: regular
  • Advantage: semi-formal prunable, achieves form quickly

Symmetrical patterns: classical schemes

A French formal front garden is always mirrored along a central axis (usually the front door or central line of the plot).

Pattern 1: The symmetrical rectangle

  • Rectangular bed (e.g. 8 m × 4 m) in the centre
  • Boxwood/Lonicera hedges along both sides
  • Each hedge identically pruned (min. 60 cm wide, 120 cm high)
  • Space between hedge and boundary: 50 cm buffer
  • Effect: classical, restful, formal

Pattern 2: Two semicircles (parterre)

  • Two rounded hedges left and right
  • Diameter 3 m
  • Hedge shaped with 180° curve
  • Fill: grass, gravel, or low flower bed
  • Effect: elegant, looks larger than rectangle

Pattern 3: Lattice (Versailles style)

  • Three hedges at angles from corner to corner
  • 45° angles
  • Same cultivar along each line
  • Width: 40 cm per hedge
  • Space between: 1.5–2 m
  • Effect: very sophisticated, harder to prune

Pruning schedule and maintenance

A Dutch front garden in formal style requires two to three prunings per year:

  • May-June: first cut, rebuild full form
  • August: second cut, detail refinement
  • October (optional): autumn maintenance, winter preparation

Pruning work:

  • Hedge shears (manual) for fine lines
  • Electric hedge trimmer for large volumes
  • High-reach pruners for arches
  • Thick branches (>1 cm) saw, do not cut

Infill: what grows between the hedges?

The filled compartments are crucial to the overall picture.

Classically elegant (minimalism):

  • Gravel alone (white or grey, 5 cm deep)
  • Each section identical
  • Maintenance: hand-weed, replenish gravel yearly

Classically flowery (English influence):

  • Low flower bed (30–50 cm) with perennials
  • Clematis or roses against the hedge
  • Examples: Lavandula angustifolia (lavender), Dianthus chinensis 'Telstar' (carnation), Agapanthus 'Blue Moon' (agapanthus)
  • Height never exceeds half the hedge height

Modern French-minimalist:

  • Lawn (meticulously maintained)
  • Single sculpture or fountain in the centre
  • No flowers, pure geometry

Colour and season

French formal gardens are usually monochromatic: all plants green, no colour explosions.

Exceptions are acceptable:

  • White flowers against boxwood (very classical)
  • Red/purple flowers in small doses (rose mandala)
  • Coloured foliage (gold or silver accent) at hedge corners

Seasons play no role. Everything is evergreen. The garden is as beautiful in January as in July - pure form-power.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a hedge take to reach full adult height?

For Lonicera nitida to 120 cm takes 4–5 years with correct maintenance. Ilex crenata is slower: 6–8 years. Hedge building begins immediately after planting - first year prune sides only, then allow the top to grow.

Can I save an existing boxwood hedge?

If moth has infested it, expect loss. Counter-measures help insufficiently. Better: remove hedge and replace with Lonicera nitida or Ilex crenata. A complete replacement hedge takes only a few weeks of work.

Which plants grow fastest?

Privet (Ligustrum ovalifolium) grows fastest (30–40 cm/year), but needs heavy pruning. For formal use better: Prunus lusitanica (25–35 cm/year) - stronger and more elegant.

What does a French formal garden look like in winter?

Identical to summer - all hedges and conifers are evergreen. Snow or frost on a formal hedge is extra beautiful. The only difference: fewer flowers (there are none). A frozen fountain is the only practical issue.
