TL;DR

April is chaos: sowing, hardening, mulching, mowing, cleaning all at once. This week-by-week plan breaks April into manageable chunks. Week 1: preparation (sharpen blades, pick moss). Week 2: first sow and mow. Week 3: mulching, second sow. Week 4: increase frequency, check plant growth. Follow this schedule and you won't fall behind. On [gardenworld.app](https://gardenworld.app) note your own April tasks: visualise your front garden, mark what goes where and when.

Why week-by-week planning?

April feels overwhelming: everything grows at once, weather swings, you don't know where to start. A week-by-week plan gives structure. You do this week, then next week. No overwhelm. No forgotten tasks. No mid-April panic.

Week 1 April: Prepare everything

Focus: gear ready, soil prepared, minimal action.

Monday-Tuesday:

  • Check mower (oil, fuel, blades sharp).
  • Sharpen or have blades sharpened (garden centre, ~40 euros).
  • Check all spades, rakes, hoe (rough? replace grip).

Wednesday-Thursday:

  • Walk your lawn. Remove stones, branches, debris.
  • Walk your beds. Note weeds, damaged plants, drainage zones.
  • Check soil moisture. Feels waterlogged? Note it (do not fix yet).

Friday:

  • Order mulch if you will mulch (delivery week 3).
  • Order seeds if you don't have them (delivery week 2).
  • Plan week 2 (what weather expected, what sow first).

Weekend:

  • Pick moss from lawn (gently, full rake).
  • Remove dead leaves from beds.
  • Check compost bin (ripe? use it).

After this week must be ready: Gear works, beds clean, mulch ordered.

Week 2 April: First sow and mow

Focus: first real action. Sow and first mow.

Monday-Tuesday: First sow

  • Check soil temperature (thermometer in soil, 10+ degrees ideal).
  • Sow peas (rows 5 cm deep, 30 cm apart). Label rows.
  • Sow broad beans (same depth/spacing).
  • Sow spinach (shallow, 1 cm deep).
  • Sow lettuce (every 2-3 days some for continuous harvest). Shallow.

Wednesday:

  • Sow tomatoes/peppers/aubergine in trays on windowsill (warm, 20+ degrees, good light).
  • Water well, place in light spot (windowsill or grow lamp).

Thursday-Friday: First mow

  • Check lawn height. Is it growing? (Visible green growth?)
  • Set mower to 4-5 cm.
  • Mow slowly, catcher on. First half lawn in one direction (e.g. south-north), then other half.
  • Debris to compost or bin.

Weekend:

  • Water your sow lightly. Not soaked, moisture felt.
  • Check trays with tomatoes. No sprouts yet, patience. Keep warm, good light.

After this week must be ready: First sow done, first mow done, trays started.

Week 3 April: Mulching and second sow

Focus: mulch beds, sow more.

Monday-Tuesday: Mulch preparation

  • Mulch arrives. Dump near beds (not in).
  • Check mulch type (bark? good, otherwise return).
  • Rake weeds from beds (full spade, you have time).

Wednesday: Mulching

  • Mulch first bed (e.g. half front garden). Start section by section.
  • Ensure 5-6 cm depth even everywhere.
  • 5-10 cm gap around plant stems.
  • Water well after mulching.

Thursday: Mulching continued

  • Mulch remaining beds.
  • Ensure finishing neat against borders.

Friday: Second sow

  • Sow carrots (1-2 cm deep, thin sow).
  • Sow radishes (1 cm deep).
  • Sow dill (shallow, below soil surface).
  • Sow chives (directly, leave outside).
  • Sow courgette in trays (warm, good drainage).

Weekend:

  • Check first sow: have peas/beans germinated? (2 weeks, patience).
  • Water tomato trays carefully (top 5 cm can feel dry).
  • Check mulching: is it in place? Storm? Rake back.

After this week must be ready: Beds mulched, second sow done.

Week 4 April: Hardening, front garden finale

Focus: harden tray plants, increase lawn frequency, final checks.

Monday-Tuesday: Hardening start

  • Tomato/pepper/aubergine trays: place outdoors in shade during day (2-3 hours).
  • Return indoors mid-afternoon.
  • Check moisture: top 5 cm feels dry? Water.

Wednesday:

  • Second lawn mow. Alternate direction (last week north-south, now east-west).
  • Check lawn height. Still 4-5 cm? Good. Shorter? Stop mowing, wait week.

Thursday:

  • Harden longer: trays outdoors day 4-6 hours, inside at night.
  • Check weather forecast. Frost predicted? Shield trays extra.

Friday:

  • Check all sow: germination status? Growth visible?
  • Carrots/radishes: growth felt? (Germination 2-3 weeks, patience).
  • Lawn growth? Third mow this week or next? (Check growth, not fixed schedule).

Weekend:

  • Garden tour: take photos front garden (for [gardenworld.app](https://gardenworld.app) later).
  • Check drainage: rainwater gone, not standing? Good.
  • Check weeds in mulched beds (should be minimal, else mulch too thin).

After this week must be ready: Hardening in full swing, front garden in rhythm, everything on schedule.

Week 4 onwards: May preparation

Late April (still week 4):

  • Check night temperature. Stays above 10 degrees? Tray plants can stand constant outdoors (carefully).
  • Start third mow this or next week (if growth 3-4 cm visible).
  • Finish hardening: trays constant outdoors late week 4.

Mistakes in April (and how to prevent)

Mistake 1: Do everything at once (week 1)

You want everything ready. Overwhelm yourself. Result: half-finished, frustration.

Prevention: Week 1 = prep. Week 2 = sow and mow. Not all week 1.

Mistake 2: Sow too much

You see seed packets, buy everything. Plants grow faster than you eat.

Prevention: Sow small amounts, add bit more each week (continuous harvest).

Mistake 3: Mulch in wet soil

Wet soil + mulch = water stagnation. Roots rot.

Prevention: Week 3, not week 1. Week 3, soil is drier. Check moisture.

Mistake 4: Tray plants outside too fast

You want them out, put direct outside. Frost, wind, shock. Plant dies.

Prevention: Week 2 sow, week 3-4 harden, week 4-5 constant outside. Patience.

Mistake 5: Mow lawn too short too early

Week 2 first mow, you make shorter than 4-5 cm. Grass shocks.

Prevention: Always set to 4-5 cm. First mow even more cautious (4 cm).

Frequently asked questions

I am a week behind this schedule. Is it bad?

No, April runs to 30th. You can do week 1-2 work in week 2-3, etc. Timing is not rigid, growth wants to happen. Sow until end April, mulch until end April, all ok.

Must I follow exactly this schedule?

No, this is guide. Your weather may differ. Frost risk still? Delay sow. Tray seedlings not germinated yet? Patience, no panic.

I have no trays for tomatoes. What now?

Sow tomatoes direct outdoors late April (wait until night temperature 12+ degrees). Growth slower, less control, but works.

My lawn doesn't grow in April. Normal?

Yes, sometimes. Cold, wet April, grass still sleeping. Mow anyway week 2 cautiously (4 cm). Week 3-4 growth comes.

Too much work this schedule?

Priority: sow peas/beans/lettuce (week 2), first mow (week 2), mulch (week 3). This minimum. Rest extra.

It is April: begin!

This week-by-week plan makes April manageable. Not overwhelming, not forgotten tasks. Follow it and you won't fall behind. On [gardenworld.app](https://gardenworld.app) visualise your front garden at same time: sowing, mulching, lawn all in place. Planning is winning.
