First lawn mowing April: height, frequency and tips

TL;DR
April is the time for the season's first grass mowing. Your lawn grows cautiously out of winter dormancy: grass is still weak, and you want to start carefully. Ideal cutting height: 4-5 cm. Not shorter - shorter grass is frost-sensitive and dries out. Frequency: 1x per week if it grows (at 10+ degrees day/night). First mow can be even more cautious, maybe first pick off algae/moss. Mow with sharp blades, not dull. This prevents grass browning.
Healthy grass starts in April
The first mowing determines whether your lawn grows healthily all summer or half-heartedly. Mow too early? Frost damage. Mow too short? Dry grass. Don't mow thick grass? Moss and weeds take over. On [gardenworld.app](https://gardenworld.app) you plan your lawn zone precisely: size, sun exposure, drainage. Visualisation helps you anticipate maintenance.
Preparation: before the first mow
Before you start the mower, first do:
Remove moss and algae: After winter your lawn is full of moss (grey-green blanket) and algae. Completely normal. You have two options:
- Carefully rake it off: Full rake, scrape the moss. Works best for small areas.
- Leave it for the first mow: The shearing action of the mower also pulls moss from the lawn. So mow through it.
Do not use biocide or chemicals against moss. You want no residues on your lawn.
Remove stones and branches: One stone in the mower = damaged blade, stuttering motor, risk. Walk your lawn through, pick everything off.
Check soil dryness: If your lawn is waterlogged or muddy, wait. You do not want to compress in wet soil. Wait until soil feels dry (your footprint does not stay).
Sharpen blades: Sharp blades give clean cut, dull blades tear grass sprouts (brown/dull grass). Mower service: 30-50 euros. Sharpen yourself: carefully (risk).
Ideal cutting height: 4-5 cm
This is NOT negotiable. Too many gardeners mow too short (2-3 cm). This is wrong.
Why 4-5 cm?
- Grass spear length: Grass that remains 4-5 cm after mowing is optimal. Long enough to photosynthesise, short enough to look neat.
- Frost protection: Shorter grass (under 3 cm) is vulnerable. Night frosts damage it. Longer spears protect themselves against frost layer.
- Drought: Longer grass protects itself better against drying. Shorter grass dries out in heat.
- Moss resistance: Moss loves open, wet, compacted soil. Longer grass blocks light for moss.
Really, it doesn't look "messy". A lawn at 4-5 cm looks just as neat as at 3 cm, just healthier.
Frequency: how often do you mow?
First two weeks April: 1x per week if it grows (day temperature consistently above 10 degrees and grass visibly grows). If still cold, mow less often.
Mid-April onwards: 2x per week as it warms. Grass grows faster, so more frequent mowing needed.
Rule of 1/3: Do not remove more than 1/3 of grass spear length. So if your lawn is 5 cm tall, mow to 3-4 cm. Not to 2 cm in one go.
Why? Much grass removal = shock to lawn. If you remove a lot, lawn grows slower and becomes vulnerable to disease.
The first mow: procedure
Preparation checklist
- Pick off moss/algae (gently or take with mow)
- Remove stones, branches, debris
- Check soil dryness (not muddy)
- Blades sharp (feel smooth, not jagged)
- Check mower oil/fuel
Mowing direction
- First mow: Mow in straight line, e.g. north-south across entire lawn.
- Following weeks: Alternate direction. Week 2: east-west. Week 3: north-south. This prevents "rutting" (footpaths visible in grass).
Speed
Do not mow fast. Slow mowing gives better cut. Hurried mowing leads to uneven height (peaks and valleys).
Use grass catcher?
- Yes: Grass catcher (clipping bag behind mower) is good. It removes much moss and dead grass. First mows of season: catcher on.
- Later: As lawn stabilises (May onwards), you can leave clippings (mulching). Those add nutrients back.
April mowing plan
Week 1 April: Preparation. No mow yet. Pick moss, sharpen blades.
Week 2 April: First mow. Mow to 4-5 cm. Catcher on. Slowly.
Week 3 April: Second mow (if growth visible). Alternate mowing direction. Target 4-5 cm.
Week 4 April: Third mow. Past frost risk? Begin ramping frequency to 2x per week.
Front garden visualisation helps
Your lawn is not an island - it is part of your total front garden. On [gardenworld.app](https://gardenworld.app) you see: where is your lawn zone? How much sun does it get? Good drainage? With realistic front-garden rendering you see which areas need lots of maintenance and where your April focus should be.
Frequently asked questions
My lawn is full of moss. Do I need to treat it before mowing?
No. Just mow. The mower removes much moss. Moss treatment can come later, in May when grass grows stronger. April: focus is grass growth, not moss.
I always mow at 2 cm. Is that really bad?
Yes. Your lawn becomes fragile, dries out quickly, gets more diseases. Increase to 4-5 cm. It does not look weird, I promise.
Can I mulch in April (leave clippings)?
Not optimal. April clippings contain much moss and dead remains. Leaving them builds slow. Better: use catcher, mulch later in May/June when grass is healthier.
My blades are dull. What happens?
Brown/dull grass after mow, grass looks like it is scorched rather than cut. Sharpen or take mower to service.
Can I use an electric mower in April?
Yes, fine. Electric, petrol, tractor - doesn't matter as long as blades are sharp. Electric is quieter (less noise for neighbours).
Step-by-step first mow
Step 1: Preparation week 1 April
Pick moss, sharpen blades, remove stones. Check drainage.
Step 2: Set cutting height
Set mower to 4-5 cm. Check a few grass sprigs after first passes.
Step 3: Attach grass catcher
Add clipping bag or ensure catcher is on.
Step 4: Slowly across the lawn
Mow at even speed. Overlapping lines (a quarter overlap). No switching.
Step 5: Clean up
Grab bin (or clippings). Remove everything on lawn.
Step 6: Wait and repeat
Next week: again if grass shows 3-4 cm visible growth.
No hurry in April
April is known as "careful month block". Your lawn is just waking, grass is still weak. Gently, regularly, not too short, not too frequent. This gives you a firm foundation in May/June for the whole summer.
