Overview

The Paper-white daffodil (Narcissus papyraceus) is a unique narcissus species with papery white flowers that appear in dense clusters. Native to the Mediterranean region, this winter-blooming bulb is very popular as a houseplant and for early garden blooms.

Known for its strong, pleasantly fragrant flowers and its ability to bloom very early, often forced to flower in homes against December. The flowers feature a large trumpet-like corona in the center, surrounded by six white perianth segments.

Appearance and bloom cycle

The Paper-white daffodil grows 30-40 cm tall with thin, linear leaves. The flowers appear in dense clusters (umbels) of 6-12 flowers per stem. Each flower is approximately 3-4 cm in diameter, white with a yellow or orange corona in the center.

It blooms very early from December to February, both indoors and outdoors. When grown indoors, it can flower as early as December. Outdoors they bloom slightly later, typically January-February. The fragrance is strong and pleasantly sweet.

Ideal location

Weak light is acceptable for blooming indoors. Outdoors it grows best in full sun to light partial shade. Place outdoors where it receives at least 4-6 hours of daily sunlight.

Indoors: place in a cool, bright window. Direct sun stimulates blooming. For winter pot flowering, maintain around 15-18°C. Cool environment extends bloom period.

Soil requirements

Flower bulbs need well-draining soil. Use potting mix blended with grit or sand for optimal drainage. For garden planting, ensure perfect drainage, especially in wet winters.

The plant grows in various soil types as long as drainage is perfect. Add sand to clay soil. Bacterial root rot occurs in waterlogged conditions. Sow in growing media with neutral to slightly acidic pH.

Watering

In pots: water well after potting, then moderately until growth begins. Once growth is visible, water regularly to keep soil lightly moist. Never let the soil dry completely.

Outdoors: water regularly during the growing period if there is no rainfall. Once flowering finishes, stop watering. The plant rests and needs no more water.

Pruning

Minimal pruning needed. Once flowers fade and collapse, remove spent blooms. This helps keep energy in the bulb rather than seed production.

Remove leaves only after they are completely yellowed (at least 4-6 weeks after flowering). Green leaves nourish the bulb for next year. Cutting green foliage means no nutrition for future blooming.

Maintenance calendar

October: Plant bulbs outdoors in soil or in pots.

November-December: Green foliage growth. Indoor potted bulbs offer blooming by December.

January-February: Flowering outdoors and extended indoor blooming.

March-May: Leaf yellowing. Nutrition for next year.

June-September: Rest period. Lift bulbs outdoors after foliage dies, store dry.

Winter hardiness

The Paper-white daffodil is hardy to USDA zone 8-9 (down to about -10°C). In cold regions (zone 7 and colder), bulbs must be grown indoors or somewhere protected. They are susceptible to prolonged frost.

In Southwest Netherlands, Belgian coast, and Southwest France it can winter outdoors with mulch protection. Further north bulbs must be grown in pots and brought indoors for winter.

Companion plants

The white flowers combine beautifully with blue or purple spring-flowering plants like grape hyacinth or crocus. With yellow-flowering daffodils it creates lovely contrast.

Indoors in pots, combine with ivy or other evergreens for structure. In gardens group in clusters of 5-7 bulbs for impact.

Closing

The Paper-white daffodil offers snow-white flowers and strong fragrance when most gardens still sleep. For early blooming and aromatic enrichment of the early garden, plant this daffodil. On gardenworld.app discover how winter blooming revitalizes your front garden.
