Overview

The Caucasian Scabious (Lomelosia caucasica) is a charming perennial plant native to the Caucasus and adjacent mountainous regions. This rare species, also known as Scabious, is known for its ball-shaped flowers in warm red-purple tones. It is a perfect choice for sunny borders and xeriscaping gardens.

Appearance and bloom time

The Caucasian Scabious reaches heights of 40-60 centimeters and forms neat, compact clumps. The flowers are ball-shaped to pom-pom-like, approximately 3-4 centimeters in diameter, in warm red-purple hues. They appear from May to October in continuous bloom. The leaves are grayish-green with a fine texture.

Ideal location

Choose a location with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. This plant also grows reasonably well in partial shade, but blooms more abundantly in full sun. An elevated, well-drained location is ideal. Protection from heavy rain is beneficial, as wet flowers can rot.

Soil

The Caucasian Scabious accepts almost any soil type with good drainage. Preference is for neutral to slightly alkaline soil with pH 6.5-7.5. Organic material can be added, but is not essential. Well-draining, not overly nutrient-rich soil promotes more flowers and more compact growth.

Watering

Once established, this plant is reasonably drought-tolerant. Water regularly in the first season. Thereafter, water only during prolonged dry periods. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot. During rainy periods, avoid waterlogging.

Pruning

Regularly remove spent flowers to stimulate longer bloom. After first frost, the foliage can be cut back to 10 centimeters height. This promotes compact growth in the following season. In subsequent years, only dead material needs to be removed.

Maintenance calendar

April-May: apply fertilizer, remove old growth. May-October: bloom period, remove spent flowers. October-November: prepare plant for winter. November-April: winter dormancy, no maintenance.

Winter hardiness

The Caucasian Scabious is moderately winter-hardy and suitable for climate zones 6-9. In more northern regions, protection may be beneficial. Good drainage is essential for winter survival. With proper drainage, this plant can overwinter outdoors in the Netherlands and Belgium.

Companion plants

Beautifully combined with other Mediterranean perennials like lavender, marjoram, and catmint. Grasses like festuca also create nice contrasts. Low-growing sedum and stonecrop provide support.

Closing

The Caucasian Scabious offers gardeners a long-blooming, low-maintenance plant with special ball flowers. For Mediterranean and dry gardens, this is an essential element.
