Overview

Spring-vetch (Lathyrus vernus), also known as spring pea, is an enchanting early-flowering pea (Fabaceae) native to Europe through Siberia and Iran. With its elegant red, purple and sometimes white flowers appearing from March–April, it ranks among the first harbingers of spring in temperate gardens. This is not a sun-loving, drought-tolerant plant: spring-vetch feels at home beneath deciduous trees, in woodland edges and in lightly shaded borders.

Spring-vetch flowers for approximately two to four weeks, then develops ornamental seed pods. The plant grows 30–40 cm tall and wide, with elegant pinnate foliage and an upright, non-climbing habit. Because it fades away after seed set completes (May–June), it is ideal for shade planting where summer bloomers will later take over. On gardenworld.app you can create a woodland-style garden design where spring-vetch plays a perfect supporting role beneath larger specimens.
