Overview

Variegated spurge (Euphorbia marginata) is a striking ornamental from the Euphorbiaceae family. This American species naturally occurs from Western to Central America and Mexico. It distinguishes itself through unique white-edged foliage, making it tremendously popular in garden design. The plant typically grows as an annual in temperate climates.

Appearance & Bloom Cycle

Variegated spurge is an upright grower reaching 60-90 cm height. The plant is renowned for remarkable foliage: green with white margins or entirely white upper portions, creating an attractive bi-color effect. These colored leaves are anatomically specialized upper leaves or 'bracts'.

Blooming extends from July through October. True flowers are minute and inconspicuous, while ornamental bracts dominate appearance. As seasons progress, white markings intensify, culminating in nearly pure white inflorescences by autumn months.

Ideal Location

Variegated spurge excels in full sun to light shade. Provide minimum 5-6 hours direct sunlight daily for optimal variegation. Insufficient light causes reduced white coloring and leggy growth.

This species is ideal for open garden positions, backyard plantings, and summer bloomers. Upright form makes it excellent for mid-height borders and container cultivation. Also suitable for cut flowers.

Soil Requirements

Variegated spurge grows on diverse soils, preferring well-drained, moderately fertile ground. Excessively rich soils promote leafy growth at expense of ornamental leaf effects.

The plant accepts pH ranges of 5.5 to 7.5. On very nutrient-poor soils, apply minimal fertilization (half-strength) in June. Avoid excessive compost in planting holes.

Watering

Water regularly throughout the growing season. The plant prefers consistently moist (but not waterlogged) conditions, especially in warm weather. Water when top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry.

In containers, water more frequently than in garden beds. Ensure excellent drainage in pots. As the plant begins senescence in October-November, gradually reduce watering.

Pruning & Maintenance

Minimal pruning required. However, pinch flower tops when they begin yellowing (September-October) to encourage compact growth. This promotes more branching.

Remove yellow or brown lower leaves for neater appearance. If the plant becomes excessively tall and leggy, gentle top pinching in June encourages more compact, bushy form.

Maintenance Calendar

April-May: Sowing or planting preparation. Space 45-60 cm apart.

June-July: Growth period; provide light staking if needed. Pinch tops for compactness.

August-September: Full bloom. Water regularly during dry weeks.

October-November: Variegation approaches peak. Recognizable white effect now prominent.

December: Plant naturally senesces. Pull out and compost.

Winter Hardiness

Variegated spurge is frost-tender annual. Against fall frosts (first night below 5°C), the plant dies. This is normal behavior; the species is cultivated as annual in temperate climates.

In very mild winters, plants occasionally regenerate from seed, but do not rely on this volunteer return. Resow annually for reliable performance.

Companion Plants

Variegated spurge pairs beautifully with:

  • Coleus varieties for contrasting leaf colors
  • Morning glory (Ipomoea) for late-season bloom
  • Pentas for continuous flowering
  • Ornamental grasses for texture
  • Caladiums for tropical feel

Excellent for summer border compositions, mixed containers, and cut-flower arrangements.

Practical Tips

Sow seed in April-May under glass or warm conditions (18-22°C). Germination takes 10-14 days. Seedlings grow rapidly; transplant after last frost. Space 45-60 cm apart.

Alternatively: purchase seedlings May-June from garden centers, Intratuin, or Gamma. Planted seedlings reach full size in 8-10 weeks.

For container cultivation use standard potting soil. Even small pots (30 cm) produce attractive plants. Set outside after last-frost date. Water regularly; containers dry faster than garden beds.

Do not fertilize or apply minimal fertilizer; excessive nitrogen promotes leafy growth and reduces white variegation. Lime application helps where soil pH is too low.

Do not harvest seedlings for cut flowers until September; the plant is not yet fully white. October harvest provides the finest white effect.

The plant occasionally self-seeds; young seedlings may emerge next spring. Pull these out unless additional plants are desired.
