Hydrangea paniculata
Panicle Hydrangea is a robust, deciduous shrub with large, cone-shaped flower panicles that open white and gradually turn pink to deep rose. The spectacular blooms from July to September and dried flower heads provide winter structure. One of the most versatile garden shrubs.
Plant in sun to partial shade in moisture-retentive, fertile soil. Water regularly during dry periods, especially in the first year. Apply compost and organic fertiliser in spring. Unlike other hydrangeas, this species tolerates full sun well.
Prune in early spring (February-March) back to two or three buds above the old wood for the largest flowers. Light thinning promotes an airy habit. Dried flower heads may be left standing all winter for structure.
Hydrangea macrophylla
Hydrangea is a popular garden shrub with large, globe-shaped flower heads blooming from June through September. The flowers turn blue in acidic soil and pink in alkaline soil. A sturdy plant that thrives in sheltered spots with partial shade.
Hosta sieboldiana
Hosta is the quintessential shade plant, valued for its large, blue-green, ribbed leaves. Light purple or white bell-shaped flowers appear on tall stems in July and August. Over the years the plant forms substantial clumps that give a shaded border a lush character.
Astilbe × arendsii
False Spirea is an elegant shade plant with feathery plumes in pink, red, or white above deeply cut foliage. It blooms from June to August, and the plumes retain their ornamental value even when dried. Astilbe thrives in moist, shady spots where many other plants struggle.
