The moon garden: light in the dusk

A white and silver-grey border feels like moonlight — soft, mysterious, restful. White foliage and white blooms reflect light even in twilight. Silver-grey foliage (artemisia, thistle) adds extra shimmer. This combination works best in small front garden, against dark backdrop, or around an evening terrace where you sit after sunset.

This isn't "all white" — that's dull. This is white with silver-grey, lavender-purple, gold, deep green — always contrast against the white base. Result: a border that's elegant by day, glows at night.

Combo 1: The classic moon border

Back (120 cm): Artemisia 'Powis Castle' (silver-grey fine leaves, grey-white bloom August-September). Middle (80 cm): Rosa 'Iceberg' (pure white, July-October, fragrant) with Salvia sclarea var. turkestanica (white-purple bloom, June-July, aromatic). Front (50 cm): Lavandula angustifolia 'Alba' (white, June-September) and Senecio 'Sunshine' (silver foliage, yellow bloom removed).

Four different white/silver plants, each with own height and timing. Together: a luminous stage.

Combo 2: For small space

Compact white-silver: Artemisia schmidtiana 'Nana' (fine silver-grey, 30 cm) behind Gaura lindheimeri 'Siskiyou Pink' (white-pink slender blooms, 70 cm) with Lavandula 'Hidcote' 'Alba' (white compact, 50 cm) and Dianthus 'Coconut Sorbet' (white-pink small, June-September, fragrant). Front: Heuchera 'Silver Scrolls' (silver-purple foliage, white-pink bloom, 30 cm).

Five species, one square metre, but full of texture and colour.

Combo 3: Full summer glow (May-October)

Timing-stacked:

  • May-June: Dianthus 'Coconut' (white, small) + Geranium sanguineum 'Album' (white-pink eye, 40 cm, May-July) + Artemisia (silver base)
  • June-July: Rosa 'Iceberg' (white large, fragrant) + Salvia sclarea (white-purple, aromatic)
  • July-September: Lavandula 'Alba' (white, fragrant, long) + Artemisia bloom (grey-white)
  • September-October: Gaura (white rocking, late bloomer) + Liriope muscari 'Alba' (white, small, October)

Six months of white-silver shimmer.

Foliage plants for silver

  • Artemisia 'Powis Castle': large, fine, silver-grey
  • Artemisia 'Silver Mound': compact, silver-white
  • Senecio 'Sunshine': silver-green, warm yellow bloom (remove for white theme)
  • Thistle (Cynara cardunculus): dramatic silver, large bloom
  • Heuchera 'Silver Scrolls': silver-purple foliage contrast

At least two foliage plants for silver base.

White flower variety

  • Rosa 'Iceberg': classic, large, fragrant, long-blooming
  • Lavandula 'Alba': white-fine bloom, aromatic, bee-paradise
  • Dianthus: fragrant small, various colours (white-pink)
  • Salvia sclarea: white-purple bloom, dramatic
  • Gaura lindheimeri: white-pink slender elegance, late bloom

Three white types minimum for continuity.

Evening light optimization

Is your terrace west-facing? Plant white-silver in full sun there — they reflect setting sun perfectly. North terrace? Plant against dark-green backdrop — contrast helps. Small front garden? White-silver border along entrance feels welcoming and opens space.

Don't spotlight the border at night (unnatural). Moonlight enough.

Moisture management

Artemisia, Lavandula, Senecio: drought-lovers, good drainage. Don't overwater (rot risk). Water first year regularly, then self-sufficient. Rosa 'Iceberg' wants slightly more moisture — but still no wet feet.

Add compost in March, then no fertiliser (they grow too lush).

Fragrance bonus

Almost all white/silver plants are fragrant: lavender, dianthus, salvia, rose. Stronger at night. Plant close to terrace — fragrance feels part of garden.

Frequently asked questions

Is white foliage really silver?

Silver-grey foliage (artemisia) has fine hairs that reflect light — genuinely silvery shimmer. White foliage (variegata) has actual white patches. Together: extra light.

Doesn't white bloom feel boring?

White + silver + lavender-purple + contrast-green = not boring. White feels luxe, not empty. The lavender accent adds warmth.

Can this be in shade?

White blooms tolerate slightly more shade, but silver-foliage plants (artemisia, senecio) need full sun. Minimum six hours. Shade: no silver.

How do you avoid "hospital-white"?

Avoid large white mass plantings. Choose slender white blooms (Gaura, Dianthus) with silver-foliage contrast. Lavender-purple accent helps.
