Why do sunflowers bend over?
Sunflowers are spectacular and beautiful, until they bend over. This especially happens with large varieties (up to 2 metres tall) and usually occurs mid to late season as the flower head becomes heavy.
Causes: insufficient support for flower weight, wind, poor soil anchoring, stem neglect, or simply a variety prone to bending. A bent sunflower can live for months but does not look beautiful.
Cause 1: Poor root support
This is fundamental. Sunflowers need strong root systems, but in loose, sandy, or poor soil they fail to develop a solid base.
Sunflowers grow best in deep, well-prepared soil. Sand alone does not work well.
Solution: For sunflowers: preparation is everything. Dig the planting hole 40-50 cm deep and fill with well-prepared soil: 50% garden soil, 40% well-rotted compost, 10% sand. This gives the root sufficient structure.
Cause 2: Insufficient nutrition / weak stem development
Sunflowers grow tall but sometimes have thin or weak stems. This happens when they receive insufficient nutrition, especially nitrogen and potassium.
With little nitrogen they grow tall but have thin stems. With little potassium stems are brittle and bend easily.
Solution: Nutrition is critical. Give nitrogen-rich feeding in early season (May-June) (nettle liquid, manure tea). Once every two weeks. This strengthens stems. Later in season (July-August) switch to potassium-rich feeding (compost tea, potato water with potassium). This strengthens cell walls in the stem.
Cause 3: Planting spacing too tight
Sunflowers in too-dense groups compete for light and grow tall and slender as a result. Light and air competition leads to thin stems.
Solution: Plant sunflowers at least 30-40 cm apart (depending on variety). This gives each plant enough space and light. Healthier, thicker stems grow as a result.
Cause 4: No support for heavy flowers
Once the flower head forms (July-September), the plant becomes very heavy. A single sunflower head can weigh 0.5-1 kg.
Without support, large specimens bend, especially in wind.
Solution: Plant a support stake right next to the sunflower, ideally early (May-June). Use:
- Bamboo pole (2.5 cm diameter) buried 30 cm deep next to root
- Green or brown rope around stem for gentle binding
- Or: wooden lath supported in U-shape over plant
Tie around the middle of stem, not too tight (plant still moves somewhat with wind, which strengthens it).
Cause 5: Wind and weather
Strong wind, heavy rain, or hail can bend large sunflowers, especially mid-bloom when the plant is already tired.
This is difficult to fully prevent, but good support helps greatly.
Solution: Strong support prevents damage. In very windy regions: choose shorter varieties (1.2-1.5 m), or plant them somewhat sheltered (not in open field).
Cause 6: Wrong variety chosen
Some sunflower varieties grow tall but have weak stems. Others are short and sturdy.
Varieties like 'Mammoth', 'Teddy Bear', 'Moulin Rouge' can grow to 2+ metres, and many have sturdy stems. 'Russian Giant' grows very tall (to 3-4 metres) and bends easily.
Solution: For next season: choose varieties with both height and stem strength:
- 'Teddy Bear': Short (0.6-0.8 m), full flower, very sturdy
- 'Moulin Rouge': Medium (1.2-1.5 m), large red flower, reasonably sturdy
- 'Autumn Beauty': Mix of colours and heights, strong stems
- 'Helianthus decapetalus': Lower variety, many flowers, sturdy
Avoid 'Russian Giant' if you want to prevent this problem.
Step-by-step to prevent bending
Step 1: Soil preparation
Dig deep (40-50 cm), mix good compost and soil. This provides sturdy roots.
Step 2: Plant at good spacing
At least 30-40 cm apart. This prevents slender growth from light competition.
Step 3: Feed regularly
- May-June: nitrogen-rich feeding (nettle liquid)
- July-August: switch to potassium-rich feeding (compost tea)
- Once every two weeks
Step 4: Place support early
Set bamboo pole or rope already in May/June. Plant grows with it.
Step 5: Tie gently
Tie around the middle with rope, not too tight. Plant must still have some flexibility.
Step 6: Check regularly
Check in July-August if plant is bending. Strengthen support if needed.
Restoring bent sunflowers
If your sunflower is already bent, you can sometimes fix this:
- Gently bring plant upright with support
- Tie firmly with rope
- Set support so plant stands upright
- Sunflower often straightens up (slowly) once support is firm
This works better if plant is still young (early bending). If very old and tired, it works less well.
Frequently asked questions
Can I cut my sunflower shorter?
Yes, you can cut a growing sunflower at desired height (April-May). This stops vertical growth, and plant focuses on side shoots and flower formation.
Cut above two leaf pairs. Plant will form sides and bloom more. This works well for size reduction.
Why do my sunflowers grow very tall but thin?
This is usually light competition (planted too densely) or nutrient deficiency (especially nitrogen). Solve both: space more widely and feed regularly.
Can I still save a bent sunflower after full bloom?
Difficult. If very old (September) and flower faded, plant has no energy left. Better: prevent than repair.
Which sunflower varieties are the sturdiest?
'Teddy Bear', 'Autumn Beauty', 'Moulin Rouge', and 'Italian White' have relatively sturdy stems. 'Russian Giant' and very tall varieties bend easily.
Frequently asked questions
How much water do sunflowers need?
Moderate watering (not waterlogged). 1-2 cm per week is good. More in very dry weather. Excessive water leads to weak stems.
Can I grow sunflowers in pots?
Yes, in large pots (20-25 litres). Shorter varieties work better (0.6-1.2 m). Ensure support and position pot somewhat sheltered (not in open wind).
What eats sunflower seed?
Birds, mice, crows. Protect seed heads late in season with netting if you want to harvest.
