TL;DR: Garden hose problem

Garden hose not working? Most likely causes: (1) Leak at connection/end, (2) Clogged (sediment, algae), (3) Internal spiral crack, (4) Broken spray nozzle. Diagnosis: feel pressure, trace leak, test flow. Repair: reconnect, flush, replace parts. Cheap and quick.

How to diagnose a failing garden hose

Before you fix it, understand what is wrong.

Symptom 1: Water sprays from the side of the hose This means leak in hose body. Reason: hole in rubber, spiral crack (nylon fibre inside tears), or material fatigue (old rubber).

Where: Feel hose along entire length while water runs. Where water sprays, there is leak. Often right at connections or after kinks where stress is high.

Symptom 2: Water does not spray strongly from the end Two possible causes:

  • Clog: sediment, rust, or algae growth in hose
  • Low pressure: leak somewhere draining pressure

Test: Put hand over hose opening. Strong pressure? Probably clogged. Weak pressure? Probably leak.

Symptom 3: No water comes out at all Complete clog or broken connection. Possible reasons:

  • Water tap is turned off
  • Hose is kinked (water blocked)
  • Hose completely clogged

Test: Turn tap full. Feel pressure at start of hose. Pressure there? Then clog or kink further. No pressure? Then leak at start.

Symptom 4: Spray nozzle does not work right This is not the hose, it is the nozzle. Water comes from hose but sprayer fails. Reason: clogged spray holes, broken part in nozzle.

Test: Press water into nozzle. Feels stiff? Probably clogged.

Step 1: Repair leaks

Small holes:

  1. Turn water off
  2. Dry hose and hole area
  3. Use hose patch kit (like bicycle patches for hoses)
  4. Follow patch instructions: rough, glue, stick
  5. Let dry 30 minutes before using

Cheap (EUR 3-5 for pack). Works for small holes.

Spiral crack (water sprays along hose): Harder. If water sprays along internal spiral, options:

  1. Patch outside (lasts weeks not months)
  2. Replace entire hose (better)

Temporary: wrap hose tightly with strong tape (duct tape) around it. Lasts about 1-2 weeks.

Broken connection (water sprays from end):

  1. Turn water off
  2. Unscrew hose from tap and nozzle
  3. Check rubber sealing ring (O-ring) - is it damaged or missing?
  4. Replace O-ring or connection
  5. Dry well, reconnect

O-rings cost EUR 0.50-1 each. Most homes have spares.

Step 2: Address clogging

If water does not spray strongly and you found no holes:

Simple flush:

  1. Set tap to MAXIMUM pressure
  2. Unscrew nozzle (let water blast through)
  3. Hold hose upright so sediment flushes out
  4. Repeat 2-3 minutes

Removes loose sediment.

Deep flush (if simple does not work):

  1. Turn tap off
  2. Turn on and off QUICKLY 10-15 times (pulse)
  3. This breaks up clogs
  4. Let full water blast through for 10 seconds

Chemical clean (for stubborn clog):

  1. Fill bucket with white vinegar (cheap)
  2. Put hose in vinegar 1-2 hours
  3. Flush hose with clean water
  4. Repeat if needed

White vinegar dissolves sediment and algae.

Step 3: Repair or replace spray nozzle

Clogged spray holes:

  1. Fill bucket with hot water
  2. Put nozzle in, spray holes pointing up
  3. Let soak 30 minutes
  4. Press spray holes or use toothpick gently to clear holes

Broken or worn nozzle: Costs EUR 2-8 for new good nozzle. Cheaper than new hose.

Recommendation: Buy adjustable nozzle (adjust water flow from soft to hard). Much better than fixed patterns.

Step 4: Prevention and long-term care

Garden hoses last longer with good care.

Prevention:

  1. Turn off water and drain hose at end of day
  2. Roll hose neatly, not in knots
  3. Store in shade, not sun (UV damages rubber)
  4. In winter: drain completely, store indoors
  5. Use hose reel, not on ground

Why this works:

  • Water in hose causes rust and algae
  • UV light ages rubber fast
  • Kinks cause internal spiral damage
  • Frost damage happens if water freezes inside

Replacement timeline: Normal hose lasts 3-7 years. Premium hose lasts 10+ years. Cheap hose (EUR 5-10) lasts 1-2 years. Better: pay EUR 20-40 for good hose lasting 5+ years.

Frequently asked questions

Can I permanently repair a hose?

Yes, for small holes (patch). For spiral crack: temporary repair with tape, but eventually replace.

How long does repair take?

Patch: 30 minutes (including dry time). Replace connection: 5 minutes. Flushing: 10 minutes.

What does replacing a hose cost?

Good hose: EUR 20-50 depending on length (25-50 metres). Nozzle: EUR 2-8. Patch kit: EUR 3-5.

Can I over-repair a hose?

Yes. If you have patched more than 2-3 times, replace. Cost is not much more and you know it works.

What is the best hose type?

Look for "reinforced garden hose" or "spiral garden hose." Stronger than standard. Cost more but last much longer.

Step-by-step

Step 1: Diagnose problem

Is there pressure at start? Where does water spray? Does nozzle work?

Step 2: Find leaks

Feel entire hose while water runs. Mark where water sprays.

Step 3: Repair leaks

Small hole: patch. Connection: replace O-ring. Spiral crack: tape or replace.

Step 4: Flush clogged hose

Set tap to max, unscrew nozzle, let water blast through.

Step 5: Repair/replace nozzle

Clogged: soak in vinegar and pick holes. Broken: replace.

Step 6: Test

Turn water on. Feels normal pressure? Sprays well? Ready.
