TL;DR: Revive dried plant
Plant pot soil completely dry? Can save it! (1) soak 30 min, (2) drain water, (3) trim dead parts, (4) shade 1-2 weeks, (5) moisture check 2-3x weekly.
How much is actually dead?
A completely withered plant looks like straw. Leaves are papery, stems hard and brittle, roots possibly also dry. This looks catastrophic, but much can recover. Roots survive longer without water than leaves. If rootstock still feels moist deep in pot, you have hope.
Why does this happen?
Oversight. Vacation. Forgot to water. Potting soil too high in peat (peat absorbs water and releases reluctantly). Or spring wind drying plants fast. Once soil dries out, it becomes hydrophobic (water repellent) and extra hard to rewet.
First step: water soaking
This is crucial. So-called "water inweking" or "soaking."
Place pot (with drainage hole!) in bucket of water to rim. Leave at least 30 minutes. Soil sucks water up from below. This is far more effective than overhead watering on dry soil (it rolls off).
You see soil slowly darken as water soaks in. After 30-45 minutes remove pot from bucket and let drain. All water must flow out of holes.
Second step: trim dead parts
Once soil is moist, cut off dead leaves, stems. Be careful: some stems look dry but are still living. Test: bend gently. If it snaps, dead. If it bends, still alive.
Cut only the outermost dead parts. Leave potentially growing stems (often bottom part of stem is still green under bark).
Third step: place in dappled shade
Plant suffered heavy stress. Full sun is now toxic for recovery process. Place plant in indirect spot (north window or indoor space without direct rays) for 1-2 weeks. This gives roots a chance without leaves drying further.
Fourth step: moisture checks
Increase moisture checking to 2-3x per week (or use moisture meter). Soil should feel like wrung-out sponge - not wet, not dry. This is crucial coming weeks.
Fifth step: no feeding for now
No fertilizer until plant shows new growth (weeks to months). Plain water only. Plant suffered shock.
Can you save dried plant or is it dead?
Signs of hope: green under bark, bending stems, or even small buds forming.
Signs of hopelessness: stems that snap like paper, roots that smell like rot, leaves that fall on touch, no green under bark.
Step-by-step
Step 1: Water soaking immediately
Soak pot 30-45 minutes in bucket of water. This is first priority.
Step 2: Drain water well
Set pot on dish, let all excess water drain.
Step 3: Trim dead parts
Remove dead leaves, stems. Test: bend gently first.
Step 4: Place in dappled shade
North window or indirect spot. No direct sun for 1-2 weeks.
Step 5: Moisture meter check
Water 2-3x weekly. Soil like wrung-out sponge.
Frequently asked questions
Can plant fully recover?
Possibly, depending on species and severity. Many plants recover, but not always to original size. New growth is compact, old branches do not return.
How long does recovery take?
Several weeks to months. First you will slowly see new leaflets. Initially they are small. Over months plant grows larger.
What if roots smell like rot?
That means root rot from too much water standing (after soaking). Plant cannot recover. Will soon die.
Can I repot in fresh soil?
Wait 2-3 weeks. Plant must stabilize first. After that yes: fresh soil helps (replacing peat with more retentive mix helps).
Will plant ever grow to full size again?
Probably not to original extent. But new growth is healthy and compact. Some gardeners cut all dead stems off and let plant regrow - this gives better shape.
