Why do dandelions overrun your lawn?
Dandelions (Taraxacum officinale) are not weeds, they are survivors. They can:
- Grow in almost any soil type
- Produce seeds for decades
- Reproduce via seedlings AND via root fragments
- Survive an entire summer in drought
- Have taproots up to 30 cm deep underground
A single dandelion can produce a hundred seed heads (puffballs) in one season. Each head contains 50-200 seeds. Simple math: 100 x 100 = 10,000 new seeds per plant per season. This seed blows to your neighbors, and their lawn, and their neighbors' lawn.
Dandelions are not harmful (they are even edible, highly nutritious), but many homeowners do not want them in their lawn. If you want to remove them, you must understand how they grow.
How fast do dandelions grow?
This depends on three things:
- Available nutrition: Rich soils = faster growth
- Water: Dry summers slow growth; wet springs accelerate
- Mowing habit: The more you mow, the more they return, the stronger they grow
A lawn mowed frequently (weekly) actually gets MORE dandelions. Why? Every time you cut the green leaf, you interrupt flowering. The plant responds by making more leaves and eventually flowers again anyway.
A lawn mowed infrequently (every 3-4 weeks) gets fewer dandelions because there is more competition from grasses.
TL;DR: Control dandelions
- Mow regularly (every 2-3 weeks in growing season)
- Pick and pull for small populations
- Do not just cut off (they grow back)
- Adjust nutrition and water (poor soil helps)
- Be patient: 2-3 seasons of work
Step-by-step: Remove dandelions from your lawn
Step 1: Assess the problem
Walk your lawn. How many dandelions do you see?
- Fewer than 10 per 100 square meters: Small problem, pulling is enough
- 10-50 per 100 square meters: Moderate problem, combination of pulling + management
- More than 50 per 100 square meters: Large problem, you need structural changes
Step 2: Pull small dandelions out
For each dandelion (especially young ones) you can:
- Use a dandelion digger (T-shaped stick with slot at bottom)
- Place the point next to the root (not too close to the stem)
- Twist gently while pulling upward
- Make sure you get at least 15 cm of the root (otherwise it grows back)
This is tedious work if you have many dandelions, but it works.
Timing: Best time is spring (April-May) when soil is moist and the plant is less strong.
Step 3: Prevention with mowing management
This is the biggest secret: Regular mowing prevents dandelions.
Why? If you mow at least weekly (in the growing season May-September):
- Flowers get no chance to form
- Seeds get no chance to ripen
- The plant gradually weakens
Correct mowing regime:
- Height: 4-5 cm (not too short)
- Frequency: Weekly (or every 10 days) in May-June, bi-weekly July-September
- Never remove more than 1/3 of the blade (this rule applies to dandelions too)
Step 4: Adjust nutrition and water
Here is what you probably do not want to hear: Nutrient-rich soils get more dandelions.
This is why:
- Artificial fertilizer stimulates everything, including dandelions
- Peat-rich soil (acidic) favors grasses over dandelions
- Chalky soil (basic) actually favors dandelions
What you can do:
- Less fertilizing: Limiting fertilizer helps. Dandelions grow better in rich soil.
- Keep acidic: Use an acidifier (e.g. aluminum sulfate) to keep your lawn acidic (pH 5-6). This favors grasses.
- Regular watering: Dandelions like dry groundwater. Regular watering helps grass and damages dandelion roots.
These are subtle adjustments, but they work over years.
Step 5: Prevent seed
Once dandelions flower (May), you have two options:
Option A: Cut off the bud before seed ripens
- Walk your lawn in May-June
- Cut off every flower as soon as you see it
- This prevents seed formation
- Tedious work, but effective
Option B: Keep mowing
- If you mow weekly, flowers get no chance
- This is why regular mowing is so important
Step 6: Be patient
This is important: You are not done in one season.
Dandelion seeds can survive 15+ years in soil. This means:
- Year 1: Much pulling, regular mowing; numbers halve
- Year 2: Fewer dandelions; further halving
- Year 3: Much fewer; only occasional specimens
This is a marathon, not a sprint.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use herbicide?
Yes, selective herbicides (for broadleaf weeds) work on dandelions. Glyphosate also works, but kills grass too.
But: Herbicide only kills leaves. Roots can regrow for years. This is why pulling actually works better.
Are dandelions bad for my lawn?
No! Dandelions are:
- Nutritious (full of vitamins)
- Useful for insects (bees love dandelions)
- Ecologically valuable
- Edible
The only reason to remove them is "I want a uniform green lawn". That is your choice. Many gardeners today accept dandelions as part of a "wildflower lawn".
Do I have to pull all dandelions?
No. You can:
- Tolerance: Accept 5-10% dandelions in your lawn
- Selective pulling: Only remove large, visible plants
- Wild lawn: Allow dandelions and enjoy the yellow
This is much less work and just as beautiful.
What if my neighbor's garden has dandelions?
Seed blows over. This is why the neighborhood sometimes seems full of dandelions. You cannot prevent everything, but:
- Managing your own lawn helps
- Talking to neighbors (some want to change it too)
- Tolerating is sometimes easier than fighting
Can I eat dandelions?
Yes! Young leaves are very tasty (more vitamins than lettuce). You can:
- Leaves in salad (young, tender leaves)
- Roots roasted (taste like chicory root)
- Flowers in tea or dried
This is actually why many people allow dandelions. Free vegetables!
Why are dandelions growing in my lawn if I pull them every month?
You probably are not getting everything. Dandelions grow:
- In soil between tiles (mower cannot reach)
- In corners (easy to overlook)
- Deep-rooted specimens (root breaks off, plant regrows)
Or you have lots of new seed from neighbors. In this case: keep pulling. After 2-3 seasons it will improve.
