What does "blind" mean with daffodils?

A blind daffodil is a daffodil that grows but produces no flower. You see green foliage, sometimes quite robust, but no flower bud. No trumpet, no bloom. This is called "blindness" in horticulture and frustrates many gardeners.

Blind daffodils had enough energy to make foliage, but not enough for a flower. This happens in year one. You plant a bulb, hope for a pretty yellow trumpet, and instead get a patch with only green leaves.

The cause usually does not lie with you as a gardener, but with the bulbs themselves. Blindness can originate in the nursery, during transport, or at home from poor conditions.

Why do daffodils become blind?

Too small bulbs: This is the main reason. A daffodil bulb must be at least 12-14 cm around to flower. Smaller and the bulb lacks stored energy for a bloom. Many cheap bulb packs contain undersized bulbs. Buy from trusted nurseries, not discounters.

Poor storage before shipping: Bulbs dislike heat. Poorly stored bulbs (warm, moist) can lose their flower buds. You cannot tell when this happens - you plant the bulb and it just makes foliage.

Underfed last season: If a bulb was poorly cared for in the previous growing season (dry, too much shade, no fertilizer), it made no internal flower. This bulb spares itself for next season.

Substandard planting hole: Daffodils in shallow soil, acid soil, or soil full of roots grow poorly. The plant uses energy on roots instead of flowers. A good planting hole with compost and depth is essential.

Waterlogging: Wet, poorly draining soil weakens the bulb. Daffodils hate wet feet. Water saturation and rot can damage the internal flower.

Rapid temperature change: Bulbs moving from warm to cold (not gradually) can lose their flower buds. This can happen during transport or storage.

Can you rescue blind daffodils?

Not this year. A blind daffodil will not flower this season. But you can prevent the same thing next year.

Let everything grow: Do NOT remove the foliage. The bulb has a chance to store some energy. After 4-6 weeks, when foliage yellows, it can be removed. But meanwhile the bulb feeds itself.

Water well: A blind daffodil in drought stores even less energy. Water regularly in April and May. This helps minimally, but every bit counts.

Add fertilizer: A layer of plant food (bulb fertilizer) in April can help. This is not a cure, but it supports bulb growth.

Dig and replace: After the season you can dig out the blind bulb. It is probably smaller than when you planted it. You can dry it, store it, and try again next fall. But many gardeners just throw it away and plant new.

How do you prevent blind daffodils?

Buy larger bulbs: "First size" bulbs are much larger than standard. They cost more but bloom almost always. For daffodils: choose at least 14 cm circumference.

Buy from reputable nurseries: Many online stores deliver good bulbs. Avoid super cheap offers. Large garden centers usually have better-selected bulbs.

Plant deep: Daffodils must be at least 15 cm deep in soil. Shallow planting means less nutrition available around the bulb.

Good drainage: Ensure well-draining soil. Mix with sand or compost. Poor drainage is deadly for bulbs.

Space between bulbs: Do not plant too close. Minimum 10 cm between bulbs. Competition weakens them.

Sun: Daffodils love sun. At least five hours direct sunlight. In shade they store even less energy.

No early leaf removal: Green foliage must stay until May/June. This is for next season's nutrition. Tempting to remove because it looks untidy.

Step-by-step

Step 1: Select quality bulbs

Buy "first size" daffodil bulbs from known nurseries. Avoid cheap packs. Good bulbs cost more but bloom almost certainly.

Step 2: Plant deep in good soil

Make a planting hole at least 20 cm deep. Fill with mixture of soil and compost. Plant daffodils 15 cm deep. Ensure minimum 10 cm distance between bulbs.

Step 3: Ensure drainage

Is your soil clayey? Mix with sand or gravel. Wet soil causes blindness. Drainage is essential.

Step 4: Water in spring

Water regularly in April and May as foliage grows. This helps bulbs prepare for next season.

Frequently asked questions

Can you save blind bulbs by digging them up and replanting?

This does not help. The bulb is blind because it has no internal flower. Replanting does not change that. Better: let it grow next season with good care, hopefully next year it will bloom. Or discard it.

Can all daffodil varieties become blind or only certain cultivars?

All can become blind, but some cultivars are more susceptible. Large trumpet daffodils (King Alfred, Dutch Master) are worst. Small poeticus daffodils are much more reliable. For certainty: choose small types.

How do you distinguish a small bulb from a normal bulb when you buy it?

Feel the weight and size. A good bulb feels heavy for its size - full of nutrition. A small bulb feels light and hollow. Always buy the largest you can find.

Does fertilizer help prevent blindness?

Partially. A bulb that is already blind does not suddenly flower through fertilizer. But you can prevent blindness next season by fertilizing well after bloom. Phosphate-rich fertilizer in May and June helps.

Why do garden centers have blind bulbs in their packs?

Often by accident. The nursery sometimes ships undersized bulbs. Garden centers may not know better. You pay for nothing. Send back or complain to the seller.

Frequently asked questions

Can blind daffodils bloom next year?

Yes, with good care. Plant the bulb in a good planting hole, care for it well, and it may bloom next season. But many people do not think it worth the effort.

Is blindness hereditary? Returned daffodils that were blind this season, will they be blind next season too?

Usually not. If you care well for the bulb (sun, water, fertilizer), it may bloom normally next season.

Are there daffodil types that never become blind?

Small botanical daffodils (Tete-a-Tete, Minnow) are much more reliable. They have smaller flowers but bloom almost always. Poeticus types too.
