TL;DR

Hydrangea grows well but doesn't bloom? Most likely: late pruning (always cut before March), frost-damaged flower buds (January-February frosts kill buds), insufficient light (3-4 hours minimum), poor drainage. Check pruning timing and feeding. Next year: never prune after March, leave flower stems until spring.

Why doesn't your hydrangea bloom?

Hydrangea is actually quite easy. But one mistake causes no flowers: pruning too late. Most hydrangeas form flower buds in summer (July-September). These buds sit in the shrub before winter. You must prevent cutting off those buds.

If you prune your hydrangea in March, April or May, you remove already-formed flower buds. Result: no bloom. This is the number-1 cause of bloomless hydrangea.

Second cause: frost damage. Winter frost can kill flower buds if temperature drops to -10 to -15 degrees Celsius. Some years (hard winters) this is unavoidable.

Third cause: too little light. Hydrangeas bloom normally even in shade, but too much shade (less than 3-4 hours sun) leads to fewer blooms.

Cause 1: Pruning too late

Most gardeners prune in March. Big mistake for hydrangea. March is TOO LATE.

Flower-bud timing:

  • July-September: flower buds form (you see small buds on stems)
  • October-March: buds dormant, but ALREADY FORMED
  • April-August: blooming

If you prune in March, you remove already-formed buds. No blooms next summer.

Correct pruning for hydrangea:

ALWAYS prune in July-August (right after blooming). Prune gently back to about halfway through last season's growth. This encourages dense growth and makes room for new flower-bud formation.

After July pruning: NO PRUNING UNTIL NEXT JULY. Really. Many gardeners want to tidy up in March. Don't. Leave winter-dead branches. Remove them in July.

Exception: if branches have frost damage (broken, discoloured), remove them when you see them (anytime), but prune only what is necessary.

Cause 2: Frost damage to flower buds

Severe winters (-10 to -15) can kill flower buds. This happens especially with older varieties (like 'Hydrangea arborescens' and 'Oakleaf'), which are less winter-hardy.

Symptom: hydrangea grows normally but no flowers appear in summer. Branches look green and healthy.

Solution (prevention): plant hydrangeas in protected location (not exposed to wind). Mulch in October with 10 cm rough compost around stem. This insulates roots. Wall or fence-planting helps - walls give winter warmth.

Modern varieties (like 'Endless Summer', 'Forever and Ever') have better frost hardiness and repeat blooming.

Cause 3: Too little light

Hydrangeas tolerate shade to some degree. But less than 3-4 hours direct sun daily leads to weaker blooming.

Symptom: leaves look pale, longer thinner growth, little or no flowers.

Solution: relocate hydrangea to sunnier spot (south-facing area). Or remove obstacles (tree hangs over? Prune branches). Hydrangeas prefer morning sun (dappled).

Cause 4: Poor drainage or water stress

Hydrangea needs much water but not waterlogged. Heavy clay soil holds water - roots rot.

Symptom: yellowing leaves, wilting despite wet soil, no flowers.

Solution: improve drainage. Mix heavy clay with compost and sand (add 20% compost, 10% sand). Raised beds help greatly. Water lots in dry periods (not permanently wet).

Step 1: Diagnose July-August

Now is the moment. Look at your hydrangea. Are there flower clusters? What color? (This helps identify variety.)

Check: did you prune in March? Then you are likely the cause.

Step 2: Prune correctly now (July-August)

Put shears away until next July. Cut ONLY previous-season dead-brown branches (carefully).

After blooming this month (July-Aug): cut back to halfway through last season's growth. Prune gently - many flowers will still stand. Cut just below faded flower clusters.

Step 3: Feeding October-March

Give feeding in October (phosphorus-rich mix). This helps flower-bud formation in coming months. In March: (NO pruning!), add 5 cm compost layer around stem.

Step 4: Wait until next July

No pruning. No gardening. Just let grow. In June-July you will see flower buds forming as small knots on branch tips. This is normal.

Step-by-step

Step 1: Check last year's pruning

Did you prune in March, April or May? Then that is the problem. This year: NEVER prune from March to July.

Step 2: Cut only dead branches now

Summer: cut only brown-dead branches completely away. Green living branches: let grow.

Step 3: After blooming (August): light pruning

Cut back to halfway through last season's growth. Gently. Many flowers can follow.

Step 4: October feeding

Give phosphorus-rich feed. Mulch 5 cm compost. No pruning until next July.

Frequently asked questions

My hydrangea is very large and wild. Must I prune?

Yes, but in July-August. Cut back to desired size (can be severe, up to 50% of growth). Do after blooming. But never in March.

Can I prune hydrangea in autumn (October-November)?

Better not. Autumn pruning makes large wounds that heal poorly before winter. July pruning (right after blooming) is much better. Only if absolutely necessary, prune minimally.

How long until hydrangea blooms again after correct pruning?

If you prune correctly this year (July), it takes until next summer (June-July) to bloom. So 9-10 months. Patience needed.

My hydrangea is very old and worn out. Can I regenerate it hard?

Yes, but takes two years. July this year: cut to 60-80 cm high (hard cut back). This summer no blooming (okay). Next July: prune again. Next summer (year two): blooming will return. Many gardeners accept one year without blooms for rejuvenation.

What do the colours of hydrangeas mean?

Blue hydrangea: acidic soil (pH under 6). Pink: alkaline soil (pH above 7). This is determined by aluminium content. You can make blue with alum in March, but acidic soil must be maintained continuously.
