Why autumn lawn fertilizing is essential
Autumn lawn fertilizing is not optional - it is crucial. After a summer of growth, drought, and mowing, your lawn is exhausted. In autumn, the hot summer ends, rainfall increases, and grass plants grow beyond their peak season. This is when you boost recovery and prepare grass for winter. A well-fertilized autumn lawn survives frost, weeds, and disease far better. Your front yard looks much greener and fuller in April and May.
The main reason: autumn fertilizers promote root growth and plant strength, not leaf growth. Winter demands root power, not fast leafing.
When exactly to fertilize: the calendar
Early September (September 1-15) is ideal for the first autumn application. The soil is still warm from summer, rainfall begins, and grass continues growing. Nutrient now gives grass three full weeks of growth before October arrives.
Late October (October 20-31) is the time for the second application - the "winter preparation." Grass grows less quickly now, and the fertilizer focuses on root and cell wall strength, not foliage.
November: only if mild. Many gardeners apply once more in early November, especially in warm years. This gives roots extra hardness. In wet, grey years you can skip this.
Timing is everything. Do not fertilize in August (too hot, promotes disease) or December+ (grass sleeps, fertilizer washes away).
Which autumn fertilizer types: potassium and phosphate, not nitrogen
This is the big difference from spring and summer fertilizers. Summer feeding is high in nitrogen (N) - you want fast growth and green. Autumn feeding is high in potassium (K) and phosphate (P), low in nitrogen (N).
You want a fertilizer with a ratio of roughly 4:6:12 or 3:6:15 (N:P:K). The numbers are usually on the package. Some good examples:
- Scotts Autumn fertilizer: approximately 4:6:12
- Wolf trax Autumn feed: 3:7:16
- Generic "autumn fertilizer" from garden centres
Potassium makes grass cell structure stronger, resistance better. Phosphate helps roots grow deeper. Nitrogen you avoid - too much N in October makes grass soft and prone to thatch and fungal disease.
Step-by-step
Step 1: Check the weather forecast
Do not fertilize with drought ahead. You need rain to dissolve fertilizer into the soil. Check your local weather: is rain coming within 3 days? Good. Drought? Wait another week.
Step 2: Mow your lawn short
Two or three days before fertilizing, mow your lawn to 3-4 cm. Short grass absorbs fertilizer better, and you have better sight of your lawn surface. No dead thatch layers blocking uptake.
Step 3: Determine application rate
Scatter or spray the fertilizer evenly. Hand-scattering is tricky - use a spreader cart instead. These cost 10-20 euros per rental at garden centres. Ensure every square metre gets exactly the same amount.
Step 4: Water it in
Directly or within hours after fertilizing, water your lawn thoroughly. A few millilitres is enough - you want fertilizer to dissolve, not flood. Rain does this naturally, or you can spray yourself.
Step 5: Three weeks rest
Fertilize, wait three weeks, then second application (October). Not twice a week, not every 10 days - three weeks rest helps grass fully absorb the first feeding.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use the same fertilizer as spring?
No. Spring fertilizer (high nitrogen) makes your lawn soft and prone to autumn fungal disease. You need real autumn fertilizer. Check the label: look for nitrogen below 5%, potassium above 10%.
What if I haven't fertilized my lawn by September?
October is still good. Early October works fine. Late October can also work, but you have less time for the plant to recover before winter.
How many grams per square metre?
This is on your fertilizer package. Usually 35-50 grams per m2. Measure your lawn (length x width) and calculate how much product you need. Better slightly less than more - overdose scorches grass.
Does organic fertilizer work in autumn?
Yes. Organic autumn feed (usually seaweed or animal products) works a bit slower but well. It is more nutrient-rich and better for soil quality. Scatter in September, wait three weeks, repeat October. Same timing.
