Why pinch bonsai in summer?
Summer is the crucial time for bonsai maintenance. This is not the time to do nothing. Precisely when your bonsai grows hardest (May-September), you make most of your pinching cuts. By pinching regularly in summer, you force your bonsai into that perfect, compact shape. Without summer pinching, your tree shoots up wild, extends itself, and loses its signature bonsai silhouette. With good summer work, you grow that beautiful, dense crown that bonsai are famous for.
What happens to bonsai in summer?
Bonsai grow fastest in summer. This comes from light and warmth. All bonsai types - Ficus, Buxus, Juniper, Maple - put out many new shoots. That is your advantage. Wherever you pinch, new growth appears quickly. So you can shape a lot in summer. But: you must pinch at the right moment, not randomly.
Step 1: Wait until the shoot has 6-8 small leaves (this is the right moment)
This is the key. You do NOT pinch the moment you see a shoot starting to grow. You wait until that same shoot has formed roughly 6-8 small leaves. Then you pinch above the second or third leaf from the base.
Why this moment? If you pinch too early (at 2-3 leaves), only a weak shoot grows back. If you wait too long (at 10+ leaves), you have too much new growth to remove. 6-8 is the golden standard.
So wait. Let that shoot grow. Have patience. After about 1-2 weeks you will see that same shoot now full with 6-8 leaves.
Step 2: Pinch above the 2nd or 3rd leaf (not higher)
Once you see the shoot has roughly 6-8 leaves, it is time. Grab your pruning shears (or your nails for very small shoots) and pinch or cut the ENTIRE SHOOT, but:
You do not pinch at the first leaf. You leave two or three leaves on, and pinch above them. This prevents removing too much and the bud dying. Always leave at least two leaves - they provide energy.
The technique: If you have pruning shears, cut with a slant motion just above the third leaf. Try not to cut straight across. A slanted cut helps prevent water sitting on the cut surface.
Step 3: Repeat every 2-3 weeks in summer months
This is what makes bonsai grow. After your first pinch (let us say late May) you wait again until each pinch point has 6-8 leaves. Then you pinch again. And again. And again.
This schedule means in June, July and August you pinch AT LEAST 4-6 times. Sounds like a lot, but it is normal for bonsai. Each time your tree gets fuller, more compact, more beautiful.
In September slow down. By October stop pinching almost completely because your tree is preparing for winter.
Step 4: Care for what you have pinched
After pinching, feeding is important. Give your bonsai fertiliser once every two weeks (bonsai food at half strength). This fuels all that new growth.
Water: Summer bonsai evaporate a lot. Check daily. The soil should feel moist but not waterlogged. Many bonsai keepers give light watering daily in summer.
Light: Move your tree to a brighter spot. Indirect sunlight is good. Not direct afternoon sun. Too much direct heat stresses the plant.
Which bonsai tolerate heavy pinching, which need caution?
Can handle frequent pinching (vigorous types):
- Ficus: Grows like a weed. Can be pinched weekly, no problem.
- Ligustrum (dwarf privet): Also very vigorous. Heavy pinching possible.
- Juniper: Grows well, loves regular pinching.
More cautious with pinching (slower growers):
- Maple: Moderate growth. Pinch less frequently (every 3 weeks instead of 2).
- Azalea: Slow growing. After bloom only 1-2 pinches.
- Elm: Moderate growth. Regular but not excessive pinching.
Common mistakes with summer pinching
Mistake 1: Pinching when shoot has only 2-3 leaves. This keeps your tree small, yes, but it hardly grows. You only get the same height. Allowing more leaves = more growth.
Mistake 2: No pinching at all in summer. Then your tree shoots up wild. Not compact, not beautiful. Summer pinching is essential for good form.
Mistake 3: Pinching in extreme heat (35+ degrees). In extreme heat, pinching stresses the plant. Wait for milder weather. Also add extra water.
Mistake 4: Pinch and immediately prune again. Let that first growth settle. You need at least two weeks between pinching so the plant regains energy.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pinch bonsai in spring too?
Yes, but differently. Spring pinching is more cautious. You focus on form (remove long branches that don't fit the silhouette). Summer pinching is more aggressive and regular.
What if my bonsai doesn't grow in summer?
Then it doesn't get enough light or food. Move it to a brighter spot. Feed every two weeks. Check it is not dry. Dry bonsai do not grow.
My bonsai got root rot last year - can I still pinch in summer?
Yes, but with less water. The soil should feel moist but dry out almost between waterings. Pinching does not hurt it; feeding is important to make it stronger.
Can I pinch and repot in summer at the same time?
No. Pinching and repotting together stress the tree too much. Pinch in June, repot in March (for next year). Never do both at once.
Step-by-step
Step 1: Wait until new shoot has 6-8 leaves
Let each new shoot grow until roughly 6-8 small leaves. This usually takes 1-2 weeks per shoot.
Step 2: Cut above the 3rd leaf from base
Remove the entire shoot, but leave at least two or three leaves on. Cut at a slant just above the third leaf.
Step 3: Repeat every 2-3 weeks
After your first pinch, wait again until the same spot has 6-8 leaves. Then pinch again. Repeat this from May through August.
Step 4: Provide feeding and water
Feed once every two weeks (half strength). Check water daily. Move to brighter spot. Slow down pinching in September.
Frequently asked questions
How much time between two pinches on the same branch?
Usually 2-3 weeks. Some fast-growing types can be pinched again every two weeks. But always give at least 10 days between pinches.
Does my bonsai get denser after pinching?
Yes. Each pinch stimulates two small shoots from the same bud. So after one pinch you get two shoots back. After two pinches, four. And so on. This makes your tree much fuller.
Must I pinch everything that grows in summer?
No. You only pinch branches growing outside the silhouette. Long stems sticking out of form go away. Growth inside you let continue (that creates form).
