TL;DR

May is the pruning window for butterfly bush (Buddleja davidii). Hard pruning in May gives you a full plant covered in flowers July-October. Technique: halve all last year's growth to 1 metre high, remove dead wood, especially thin weak growth. Do not wait until June or bloom timing misfires and you get a slow, leggy plant.

Why May is butterfly bush pruning month

Butterfly bush flowers on new wood (new shoots made from May-June onward). So pruning in May gives:

  1. Mass of new growth (June-July happens)
  2. That growth becomes loaded with flowers (July-October peak)
  3. Fewer "floppy" old branches bearing sparse flowers

Prune March? Plant is dormant, frost risk. Prune June? Growth already started, you slow its pace. May? Perfect: soil warm enough, leaves just unfurled, plant ready to erupt with new growth.

Butterfly bush is "hard pruning friendly." No caution needed. Harder pruning equals more flowers. No pruning equals thin, long branches with messy flowering.

Step 1: What must go: dead wood and old growth

Start with dead wood. Almost every butterfly bush has some wood from last year that did not survive (black, brittle). Pull at it, it snaps. Cut it flush against the main stem.

Next: Old wood (2+ years old). You recognise it by:

  • Thick (pencil-thick or thicker)
  • Bark rough and cracked
  • Side shoots sparse (little new growth)

Cut old wood back to young, green wood. This looks like:

  • Thin (cigarette-thin)
  • Bark smooth, sometimes greenish
  • Many side shoots (potential)

Goal: Remove about 40% of the old "spaghetti." Plant should become airy.

Step 2: Determine the structure

Butterfly bush flowers on 1-2 year old wood. So you want a "framework" of strong, young shoots. In May:

Look at your plant. Many long "spaghetti stems"? Those are last year's growth (really old wood). Cut them in half or more. Back to roughly 50-80 cm high, depending on current size.

Plant 1 metre tall? Prune to 60-70 cm. Plant 2 metres tall? Prune to 100-120 cm. Plant 3 metres? Prune to 150 cm.

This sounds aggressive (you remove a lot), but butterfly bush regrows quickly. In May that growth starts immediately.

Step 3: Pruning technique step-by-step

Tools: Sharp secateurs (lopper for thick wood >1 cm).

Cut angle: Always at a slant (45 degrees) just above an outward-facing bud or side shoot. This prevents water collecting on the cut. No flat cuts.

Removal: Remove anything that:

  • Is dead (black, brittle)
  • Dangles downward (no structure)
  • Crosses other shoots (create space)
  • Is thinner than a pencil (weak growth)

Spacing: Try 15-20 cm space between remaining shoots. Butterfly bush wants open structure for air and light.

Step 4: After pruning

Immediately after: No feeding needed. Plant is full of nutrients from last year.

Water: If May is dry (unusual), water. Not waterlogged.

Growth: In 2-4 weeks you see explosive growth. Young shoots appear in clusters. This is normal and desired.

Second pruning (optional, July): If you want your plant 1 metre tall by July with more branching, you can tip-prune young shoots a bit more. This gives more "head" (denser foliage, more flowers). But not required.

Shape tips for maximum flowers

Dome shape: Best for butterfly bush. Plant grows freely upward, sideways and down.

Pyramid: Also lovely. Prune lower shoots less than higher ones (inverted U).

Columnar: Not recommended for butterfly bush. Too stiff, less flowers.

Butterfly bush is "grow-what-you-want" type. After pruning it regrows fast and full.

Frequently asked questions

Can I train my butterfly bush as a tree (single stem with crown)?

Yes, but takes time. Select one strong stem, remove others, tie that one to a support. After 2 years you have tree form. Then prune crown interior yearly.

How many flowers will my plant carry after May pruning?

Plenty! Healthy butterfly bush after May pruning produces literally hundreds of flower spikes. They continue until October.

My butterfly bush does not bloom. Why?

Usually because it is not pruned hard enough. Or too much shade. Butterfly bush wants full sun and hard pruning. Try this year May prune hard (to half size), see next year difference.

Can I cut branches for vases during May pruning?

Absolutely! Cut whole branches for flower arrangements. This is actually a form of pruning. Plant thrives from it.

Will my plant get disease after pruning?

Almost never. Butterfly bush is robust. Even after hard pruning they recover quickly. No wound sealant needed.

Can I propagate cut pruning stems?

Yes, but tricky. Butterfly bush cuttings are not easy. You can try summer cuttings (June wood), but success rate low.

Pruning calendar for whole season

May: Hard prune (what we describe now). June: Monitor for issues, otherwise quiet. July: Optional tip-pruning for denser shape. August-September: No pruning, let flowers. October: Season end, no more pruning. November-March: Winter dormancy, no pruning (frost risk).

Step-by-step

Step 1: Remove dead wood

Pull at it, does it snap? Gone. Cut flush to main stem.

Step 2: Determine structure

Identify old, thin wood (spaghetti stems). Halve back to 50-100 cm.

Step 3: Prune side shoots

Remove crossing, drooping, thin branches completely. Create space.

Step 4: Water immediately

Water if May is dry. No feeding yet.

Step 5: Monitor growth

2-4 weeks: explosive growth. Normal!

Step 6: July optional

Tip-prune young growth for density (optional).

Frequently asked questions

How old should a butterfly bush be before first pruning?

First prune once plant is 60+ cm tall. Usually year 1 after purchase. Young plants 30 cm: let grow to 60 cm, then prune May.

Will my butterfly bush get heavier (larger) each year?

Yes, for years. But you can control size with pruning. Hard prune equals small. Light prune equals large. So yearly May pruning gives consistent size.

Are there varieties that flower less heavily?

Davidii is standard heavy flowerer. Dwarf varieties (Nanho Purple, Miss Molly) are smaller but equally flower-hungry. Pruning works the same.

Will I get winter hardiness problems after hard pruning?

No. Hard prune in May equals plant has whole season to recover. Otherwise (pruning October-November) frost can damage pruning wounds.
