Why has digging been recommended for so long?

Generations of gardeners have dug their gardens every spring. It feels like "housekeeping" - you overturn the soil, you mix in compost, you remove roots. The problem: what you find beneficial, your underground ecosystem finds devastating.

Digging is an intervention. It is not a neutral action. When your spade turns over the soil, you rupture millions of networks: fungi stop transporting food, bacterial colonies disperse, worm burrows collapse. Three months later your soil life has rebuilt - but you have needlessly disrupted that process. That is the heart of the no-dig debate.

Digging: what works, what fails

Digging mixes organic matter throughout your soil. That is true. A layer of compost that you work in reaches deeper than mulch on top. For heavy, compacted ground - especially after building or earthwork - digging is sometimes a reasonable emergency repair.

But the price is steep. You stir up nitrogen locked in dead organic material. Bacterial activity explodes. Nitrogen volatilizes. Your soil detonates with activity for two weeks, then collapses. Afterwards soil life rebuilds slowly.

Worm burrows are destroyed. Worm burrows are air channels and water highways built by earthworms. Spade work slices them. Routes vanish. Two years pass before the population recovers.

Weed seeds come to the surface. Your soil is full of seed banks - seeds from years past, dormant, a few centimeters down. Digging brings them up where they germinate. You get a weed explosion.

No-dig: building instead of turning over

No-dig is not new thinking. Natural soils happen the same way: dead leaves fall on top, earthworms eat them, waste falls below, fungi break it down - all from above, never inverted. No-dig follows that rhythm.

You stack layers: a layer of cardboard or thick newspaper (excludes weeds), then compost, then mulch. The soil underneath stays intact. Worm burrows remain. Soil life continues. Over two seasons - longer than digging - the soil integrates your layer into nutrient-rich soil tissue. No explosion. Quiet buildup.

No-dig is slow. You cannot immediately plant into pure compost layers. You must wait for worms to integrate it. That is a trade-off. But the payoff: you have soil with real structure, air pores, water-holding capacity - because soil life built it, not because you mechanically broke it apart.

When does digging still make sense?

There are moments when digging holds more value than no-dig:

  1. After building or earthwork If your garden was just landscaped and the soil is compacted by machinery, one dig is a reasonable "reset." You break the compaction, mix in compost, and set soil life working. Not every year, but once after disruption.

  2. Heavy clay ground Pure, thick clay with no structure - especially in low-peat areas - benefits from digging plus lots of sand and organic matter. Clay closes off after two years of digging anyway. Better: no-dig with extra sand in your layers. But one deep dig in very dense clay is defensible.

  3. Historic contamination If your ground is polluted (old factory site, serious pesticide residues), deep digging can help disperse contaminated layers so concentrations drop. After remediation, no-dig is the answer.

No-dig step by step

No-dig is simple. Pick your spot. Lay cardboard or five sheets of newspaper. Wet them so they stick. Lay 15-20 cm of good compost on top. Mulch with 5-10 cm of leaf litter or straw chippings. Wait four weeks. Plant.

In the first year the soil still seeds itself - weeds come quick from your compost layers. But after two years it is stable. No annual labor.

Can I use no-dig on my already-cultivated garden?

Yes. You do not need to dig. Simply lay cardboard over your existing ground, compost on top, and plant. The existing soil stays intact. Over two seasons your existing soil life merges with your new layers. Better than digging.

His parents did it. It feels tidy. Long ago, without fertilizer and without knowledge of soil life, digging was the only way to activate worm populations. Now we know better. Traditional is not always best.

How many times per year should I dig my garden?

Avoid it as much as possible. Digging once per spring damages your soil life significantly. If you must dig: once in autumn, once per five years maximum, no more. And always bury plenty of compost back in.

Does no-dig work in containers?

Completely. For balcony boxes and pots, no-dig is ideal. Compost, mulch on top, plant. No turning over in confined space needed.

Step 1: Stop digging

This season: no spade. Examine your soil. It may look messy. That is normal.

Step 2: Lay a barrier

Cardboard or newspaper over your current ground where you do not want weeds. Heavy newspaper outperforms thin cardboard in wind.

Step 3: Build your layers

15-20 cm of good compost on top. Mulch from leaf litter or straw chippings on top. Water to help it settle.

Step 4: Plant and wait

Plant in your compost layer. Give your soil two seasons of rest. No turning, no disturbance. Soil life works.

Practical tips

Weed control in no-dig: Years 1-2 use heavy mulch (10-15 cm). Weeds from compost layers pull easily. After two years weeds in your ground disappear forever because your seed bank remained intact (under your cardboard).

Digging wet soil compacts: Wait until your soil is noticeably drier. Wet soil compacts permanently if you work it.

Compost quality matters: Cheap compost is often unripe. Do not plant in unripe compost; it will rot. Good compost smells like forest floor, is dark brown, not hot.
