Soil test: how to order and read results

Why do a soil test?
You can fertilize for years by guesswork. But "guesswork" is usually blind. You might add too much phosphorus (bad for environment), miss nitrogen (plants grow poorly), or sow on soil far too acidic (plants cannot absorb nutrients). A soil test is cheap certainty.
For 20 euros you know exactly what is in your ground. This saves you tens of euros in unnecessary fertilizer and gives your plants the best chance.
What does a soil test measure?
A standard test checks:
- pH: Acidity (scale 0-14; 7 neutral; under 7 acidic; above 7 alkaline)
- Nitrogen (N): Plant growth
- Phosphorus (P): Plant flowering and roots
- Potassium (K): Plant strength and disease resistance
- Organic matter: Water retention and soil vitality
- Calcium and Magnesium: (Sometimes; usually on request)
Advanced tests also measure trace elements (boron, copper, manganese, zinc) and bacterial populations. But the standard test suffices for home gardens.
Where to order a soil test?
Garden centre (easy): Many centres offer testing. They give you a bag, you fill it in, you return it. Price: 20-35 euros. Benefit: fast, local, usually clear results. Drawback: less detail than university labs.
University / Agricultural extension (accurate): Universities run precise tests. Price: 30-50 euros. Benefit: very accurate results, detailed report. Drawback: longer wait (1-2 weeks).
Private labs: Labs like Eurofins or local environmental offices. Price: 40-100 euros. Benefit: very detailed (also heavy metals, pathogenic bacteria). Drawback: pricier, unnecessary detail for hobby gardener.
DIY tests (limited): You can measure pH yourself with paper (1 euro) or digital kit (10-20 euros). Testing nutrients yourself is hard and inaccurate. So: pH yourself, rest to lab.
How to take a soil sample
Very important: you only get good results from good samples.
Step 1: Choose 5-10 spots Do not sample from one spot only. Your front yard is not uniform. Take samples from sunny side, shade, where you fertilized much, where you barely did. This gives the average.
Step 2: Dig up soil Go 20-30 cm deep. Take a spade-full from each point. Throw everything into a bucket and mix well.
Step 3: Divide into bag The test laboratory usually wants 500 g (a handful). Fill their bag and label it. Write your name, address, and date.
Step 4: Pretreatment Many labs want dry soil. Let your sample dry 1-2 days (in container, not sun). Break up large clumps by hand. Remove big weeds, stones, roots.

pH: Crucial value
- Under 5.5: Far too acidic. Plants will not grow. Add lime (100-200 kg/1000m2)
- 5.5-6.5: Acidic. OK for many things, blueberries love it. Lemon trees do not.
- 6.5-7.5: Ideal for most vegetables, flowers, trees
- Above 7.5: Alkaline (chalky). OK for many, but iron-uptake problems. Green manure helps
Organic matter: Humus percentage
- Under 2%: Very low. Add compost, green manure, mulch layers
- 2-3%: Low. Good foundation, can improve
- 3-5%: Good. Keep topped up with annual mulch
- Above 5%: Very good. Actually too much for intensive food growing
N-P-K (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium): The trio Many labs give "available" nutrients. So not the total, but what plants can absorb now.
- Nitrogen (N): Low (under 30)? Green manure or animal manure. Already high? Do not add more!
- Phosphorus (P): Already high? Do not add more (environmental load). Low? Bone meal/guano powder
- Potassium (K): High? Do not add. Low? Charcoal or potassium salt (potash)
Calcium/Magnesium: Sometimes separate
- Calcium low? Add lime (chalk)
- Magnesium low? Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) in water
Step-by-step
Step 1: Decide where to test
Garden centre (fast, easy), university (accurate, slow), or private lab (detailed, dear).
Step 2: Request test kit
Call or visit. Say: "I want my soil tested." They give you bags and instructions.
Step 3: Take soil sample
5-10 spots, 20-30 cm deep. Mix all. Divide into bag. Dry 1-2 days. Write label.
Step 4: Send in or deliver
Labs cost usually 20-50 euros. Pay. Wait 1-2 weeks for results.
Step 5: Read and interpret
Receive your report. Check pH first. Then organic matter. Then N-P-K.
Step 6: Adjust per advice
Too acidic? Lime. Low organic matter? Compost or green manure. Too much phosphorus? Do not fertilize more.
What to do with the results
Acidic soil (pH under 6.5): Add calcium-rich material. Agricultural lime (CaCO3) is slow. Slaked lime faster. Dose: lab advises, usually 1-2 tons/hectare = 100-200 kg per 1000 m2.
Low organic matter: Add 2-5 cm compost yearly (15-25 m3 per 1000 m2). Or sow green manure (phacelia, clover) and work in.
Much or little N-P-K: Already much? Stop adding. Little? Add animal manure, compost tea, or organic brands. Follow lab advice on label.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I test soil?
Once every 3-5 years. After big changes (heavy fertilizing, new plantings) sooner. Established garden? Once every 5 years enough.
Can I test multiple gardens at once?
Yes, but keep samples separate. Garden 1, garden 2, garden 3 = 3 bags. Labs usually handle this.
Are DIY test sets like Rapitest reliable?
Rapitest and similar measure pH reasonably. Nutrients? Much less accurate. Error margin can be 30%. For real insight: lab.
What does ppm and mg/kg mean?
Same unit. Mg/kg = milligram per kilogram (standard European). PPM = parts per million (old American). 1 ppm = 1 mg/kg.
Lab says phosphorus 200 mg/kg - is that much?
Yes. Normal is 30-50 for flowers, 50-100 for vegetables. 200 is much. Do not add. Costs environment and binds other nutrients.
Adding lime - how much exactly?
Lab advises. Usually 100-200 kg per 1000 m2 (per layer per cm pH rise). Agricultural lime works in 2-3 months. Slaked 1 month. Spread application (not all at once).
