Why safety glasses are essential for pruning

Your eyes are your most valuable garden asset. A tiny wood splinter can scratch your cornea. A falling branch can seriously injure your eye. Slipping secateurs can fly toward your face. Most gardeners ignore eye protection until something serious happens.

The statistics are clear: about one third of home eye accidents happen in the garden. The vast majority are preventable with simple safety glasses. This is not something you tinker with. This is life-critical.

The difference: safety glasses versus ordinary sunglasses

Many beginners think: "I have sunglasses, that's enough." No. Ordinary sunglasses offer no safety protection. Here are the differences:

Ordinary sunglasses:

  • Designed for UV protection, not impact
  • Glass or plastic lens is thin
  • Breaks easily under impact
  • Offers no lateral protection (splinters pass along the sides into your eye)
  • No speed certification

Safety glasses:

  • Designed for impact-resistance
  • Thick polycarbonate lens (at least 2-3 mm)
  • Can withstand high-velocity materials
  • Encloses your eye completely, no gaps for splinters
  • Passes ANSI Z87.1 test (US) or EN 166 test (EU)
  • Very break-resistant

Safety glasses are not optional. This is real protection.

Glass types and their protection

Not all safety glass lenses are equal. Here are your options:

Clear polycarbonate:

  • Most popular for pruning
  • Good visibility
  • Excellent impact-resistance
  • EUR 15-35
  • Suitable for daylight and shade work

Yellow/amber polycarbonate:

  • Improves contrast in shaded conditions
  • Less suitable for bright sunlight
  • EUR 15-35
  • Ideal if you work much in shade

Smoked/dark brown polycarbonate:

  • Reduces brightness
  • Suitable for very sunny weather
  • Not ideal for shade work
  • EUR 15-35
  • Limited visibility, avoid for most pruning

Anti-fog coating:

  • Many safety glasses have this
  • Prevents condensation (important in damp garden)
  • Add EUR 5-10 to price
  • Very handy

UV protection:

  • Standard in quality safety glasses
  • Protects against sun damage
  • Not essential but nice to have

For pruning I recommend clear polycarbonate, possibly with anti-fog coating.

Fit and comfort

Safety glasses that don't fit well don't work. They slip off, you remove them, your eye is exposed.

What you are looking for:

  • Snug fit (not too tight, not too loose)
  • Ear cushions that are comfortable, not cutting
  • Nose pad that fits well (not high on your nose)
  • No gaps between glasses and your face (especially around nose sides)
  • Good sight angle (you can see well upward and to the sides without turning)

For eyeglass wearers:

  • Many safety glasses are over-the-glasses designed (fit over your normal glasses)
  • Make sure your home glasses are small - large frames don't fit under safety glasses
  • Alternative: graduated safety glasses (with your strength built-in) - cost more (EUR 50-100) but very comfortable

Test: Put on glasses, bend your head downward with force. Does it slip? If yes, too loose. Ears hurt after five minutes? Too tight.

Impact test and certification

Only acceptable safety glasses are certified. Here are the tests:

ANSI Z87.1 (US):

  • "Z87" marked on your glasses
  • Glasses must withstand 1-inch steel ball from 1 inch height
  • International standard for many countries

EN 166 (Europe):

  • "CE" marked on your glasses
  • Similar test
  • Often stricter than ANSI for certain impact speeds

See no mark? Don't buy. This is untested protection.

Maintenance and replacement

Safety glasses age. Lens doesn't visibly craze, but it becomes porous. This reduces impact resistance.

Maintenance:

  • Clean monthly with mild soapy water
  • Never use hot water (can damage lens)
  • Never dry in cracks, this crazes glass
  • Store in protective case

Replacement:

  • Replace every two years for regular use
  • Replace immediately if you see visible damage (scratches, small cracks)
  • After heavy impact, even if not visibly damaged (impact can cause internal damage)

EUR 20-35 per glasses, two years use, is acceptable.

Step-by-step

Step 1: Check your current glasses

Do you already have safety glasses? Check the mark. See "Z87" or "CE" on the frame? If no, not safe.

Step 2: Choose your glass type

For pruning: clear polycarbonate. Test it in your garden - can you see well in your work area?

Step 3: Fit for comfort

In store (or at home with exchange): put on, move your head, bend. Does it slip? Too loose. Pain? Too tight.

Step 4: Check certification

Before buying: look for "Z87" or "CE" on the frame or packaging.

Step 5: Wear them ALWAYS

This is crucial. Many accidents happen because people remove the glasses "just for a moment," "for this one cut." Wear them the whole job.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I just wear my contact lenses?

Contact lenses offer no impact protection at all. A splinter goes straight into your eye. Plus, if you are injured, your eye is already damaged. Contact lenses can be difficult to remove in panic.

What if I wear ordinary glasses?

Put your over-the-glasses safety glasses over your normal glasses. This is uncomfortable but safe. Or switch to graduated safety glasses (built-in strength).

Are expensive brands better than cheap ones?

As long as they are ANSI Z87 or EN 166 certified, no. Many EUR 20 glasses are just as safe as EUR 80 glasses. The difference is usually branding and extra coatings (anti-fog, mirrored, etc.), not safety. Buy the brand that fits well and is comfortable.

Can I use my safety glasses for several years?

Yes, as long as there is no visible damage (scratches, cracks) and you maintain it well. After heavier use (daily) replace every two years. Light use (weekends) can last four years.
