Provence style: warmth and lavender at home
A Provence garden feels like a holiday. Lavender, warm gravel, terracotta pots, soft light — everything feels old and calm at once. Not stiff, not artificial. Just: thoughtful simplicity. The secret? Right plants (lots of lavender), good soil (dry), and location (sunny).
This isn't a copy of France — it's bringing the feeling of Provence to your front garden. Even in the Netherlands this works, as long as you manage moisture and choose plants that handle drought.
Step 1: The basis — lavender everywhere
Lavender is Provence. Not one bush, but several. Different types:
- Lavandula angustifolia (English lavender, hardiest, 60-80 cm, July-September, purple-white-pink)
- Lavandula stoechas (Spanish lavender, dramatic, purple top, 60 cm, May-July)
- Lavandula dentata (toothed lavender, greyer leaf, 80 cm, long-blooming)
Plant them in groups of three or five, not one here-one there. Lavender fields feel better than scattered shrubs.
Step 2: Rose + Lavender Duo
Add classic rose:
- Rosa 'Pierre de Ronsard' (pink, double, fragrant, 150 cm, July-October)
- Rosa 'Clair Matin' (soft pink, semi-double, 200 cm, June-October)
- Rosa 'Buff Beauty' (apricot-pink, aromatic, 120 cm, July-October)
Rose as accent, lavender as dominant. Together: romantic without overdone.
Step 3: Drought-tolerant partners
Lavender doesn't like wet friends. Add:
- Artemisia 'Powis Castle' (silver-grey fine leaf, 90 cm)
- Salvia officinalis (garden sage, aromatic, purple-white bloom, 60 cm)
- Santolina chamaecyparissus (cotton lavender, yellow button, silver leaf, 50 cm)
- Nepeta (catmint, purple-white, 60 cm, June-October, fragrant)
All drought-lovers, all fragrant, all Provence-feeling.
Step 4: Gravel & Path
Gravel isn't decoration — it's moisture management. Warm gravel around plants helps drainage and feels Provençal. Add grit:
- Under lavender (10 cm deep)
- Along paths
- Around rose base
Heat from gravel helps lavender bloom, and it looks natural.
Step 5: Terracotta Pots (optional)
Not everything in ground — a few large terracotta pots with lavender or rose gives extra Provence accent. Place them around entrance or terrace. They work as welcome signal.
Provence garden maintenance
Simple! Lavender pruning after bloom (August-September) keeps shrubs compact. Rose normal rose care. No fertiliser needed — drought plants grow better on poor soil (more compact, more bloom).
Water first year regularly (establish roots). After that drought-proof — you don't need to water in normal summers.
Provence bloom timing
- May-June: Lavandula stoechas blooms
- June-July: Rose and Lavandula angustifolia together
- July-September: Full lavender bloom (peak August)
- October: Late rose bloom, lavender fades
This gives continuity all summer.
Colour choice
Provence also feels fragrant and warm. Choose tones:
- Lavender purple (classic)
- Rose pink to apricot (not deep red)
- Silver-grey foliage (artemisia)
- Warm sand-yellow gravel
No large colour contrasts — everything feels soft.
Fragrance: the real Provence
Lavender, rose, sage, catmint, cotton lavender — almost all fragrant. Sit outside in evening? Fragrance grows with dusk. This is the real Provence feeling.
Frequently asked questions
Does lavender really grow well in the Netherlands?
Yes, as long as drainage is good. Wet winters are risk. On heavy clay: raised bed or gravel addition needed. On sandy soil: perfect, just plant.
Do I really need lots of lavender?
For Provence feeling: yes. One lavender feels lost. Five to seven in groups gives right volume.
Can I do this in full shade?
No. Lavender demands full sun (at least six hours). Shade: no bloom, no fragrance, difficult drainage.
How long before it feels Provençal?
First season: still small. Year two: shrubs fill. Year three: full Provence feeling with lavender volume.
