Overview

Rhododendron indicum, better known as Satsuki azalea, is a refined japanese azalea from West and Central Honshu and Kyushu. This evergreen shrub is renowned for its beautiful, typically pink to purple flowers and compact growth habit. In Japan, this plant holds great cultural significance and is widely cultivated as bonsai.

Appearance and Bloom

The Satsuki azalea grows as a compact, attractive shrub with small, dark green leaves. Flowers appear in late spring to early summer in striking pink, purple or white shades. The flowers are often two to five centimeters wide and grow at the branch tips. This plant typically reaches 1-2 meters in height.

Ideal Location

Choose a semi-shaded location, especially in warmer climates. Provide morning sun and protection from hot afternoon sun. In temperate climates, more sunlight can be given. The plant appreciates shelter from harsh winds.

Soil

Like other azaleas, the Satsuki requires very well-draining, acidic soil (pH 4.0-5.5). A mixture of garden peat, peat moss and sand works excellently. Add extra humus for better water retention. Ensure perfect drainage.

Watering

Keep soil consistently moist during growth and flowering. Water regularly in warm periods, daily if needed. Water less in winter but do not let soil dry out completely. Use rainwater whenever possible.

Pruning

Pruning can be done after flowering. Remove weak or crossing branches. For dense, compact shrubs, light pruning helps. Old shrubs can be gently rejuvenated. With bonsai shaping, more regular pruning is required.

Maintenance Calendar

Spring: Water regularly, apply acidic fertilizer. Summer: Maintain moisture, check for pest damage. Autumn: Gradually reduce feeding. Winter: Minimal feeding, protection in severe winters.

Winter Hardiness

Satsuki azalea is moderately hardy (down to -8 to -12 degrees Celsius). In cold regions, winter protection is beneficial. Mulch around the plant and provide protection against hard frost. In very cold areas, better to grow in containers.

Companion Plants

Combine with other japanese azaleas, dwarf trees and japanese maples for a traditional japanese garden feel. This compact growth habit makes them ideal for gardens with limited space.

Closing

Satsuki azalea is a precious choice for refined garden enthusiasts. With proper acidic soil and regular care, this plant creates spectacular blooming displays yearly. Seek selected cultivars from specialized nurseries.
