Pelargonium carnosum is a remarkable succulent from Namibia and Cape Provinces of South Africa. This plant grows on rocky hillsides and semi-arid environments, and it stands out immediately due to its distinctive thick, fleshy stems. The succulent nature allows water storage, making it exceptionally drought-resistant and well-suited to water-conscious gardening. Reaches 30-60 cm in height and develops a compact, shrubby habit. The stems are notably thick and fleshy, typically grey-green with a subtle waxy surface. Flowers appear in clusters from spring through early summer in delicate pink to light red. Place this pelargonium in full sun or dappled shade. At least 5-6 hours of direct sunlight daily ensures optimal growth. In very hot climates, light afternoon shade prevents sun scorch. Soil composition is critical - use very well-draining cactus or succulent potting mix amended with 30-40% mineral additions. Allow soil to dry completely between waterings. During the growing season, water less frequently than intuition might suggest. Pruning is minimal. Remove dead or damaged branches in spring. If the plant becomes leggy, cut main branches back halfway. These thick stems recover slowly, so aggressive pruning is unwise. Pelargonium carnosum does not tolerate frost. The minimum temperature is approximately 5-8 degrees Celsius. In cold climates, bring the plant indoors to a cool, dry spot. Combine with other Mediterranean and drought-tolerant species for best results. Find young plants at quality nurseries for this worthwhile addition.
