Lavender-leaved rockrose (Helianthemum syriacum) is a charming low-growing plant from the Cistaceae family, originally from the southern and eastern Mediterranean region. Reaching only 30-50 cm in height, it forms a compact, beautiful mass of fine, grey-green foliage. It is an excellent choice for rock gardens, alpine troughs, and Mediterranean schemes where drought tolerance and minimal maintenance are essential.
The foliage is characteristically lavender-like, narrow and linear with soft, grey pubescence that gives the plant a velvety appearance. This fine foliage creates elegant contrast with bolder-leaved plants in your garden design. Flowers appear in May-June and are small, approximately 1 cm across, but cheerfully yellow or pink in colour, sometimes with orange or red centres. Though small, they appear in abundance and smother the plant in bloom.
Lavender-leaved rockrose thrives in full sun (8+ hours direct light) and very well-drained soils. This plant tolerates very acidic to neutral sand and rocky ground far better than ordinary garden soil. It withstands very dry conditions well, making it ideal for rock walls and Mediterranean gaps.
Soil requirements: This plant grows best in sandy, rocky soils with minimal fertility. pH can range from very acidic to neutral, but it performs better in slightly acidic soils. Add extra gravel and sand when planting to improve drainage. This plant cannot survive in heavy clay soils or where water stagnates.
Watering: Once established, this plant is extremely drought-tolerant. During the first growing season, provide regular watering until it establishes. After establishment, water very sparingly - only during severe drought periods. This plant actually suffers more from overwatering than from water stress.
Sunlight and ventilation: This plant requires full sun and excellent air circulation. In shade or poorly ventilated locations, growth becomes leggy and flowering diminishes. Position it where air flows freely around it.
Pruning: After flowering, light trimming helps maintain compactness. Deadhead spent flowers. In spring, careful trimming helps maintain shape, though this plant does not require heavy pruning.
Hardiness: Lavender-leaved rockrose is hardy to USDA zone 7 (-17 Celsius), meaning it overwinters outdoors in most of the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and Germany. In very harsh winters in northern areas, protection can help.
This plant attracts bees and other pollinators. It is valuable in groups on rock walls, in rock gardens, and as underplanting beneath larger Mediterranean shrubs.
Companion planting: Lavandula, Santolina, Cistus, Teucrium, small Sedum and Sempervivum species. These combinations create characterful Mediterranean rock gardens.
Availability: Lavender-leaved rockrose is less common but available at nurseries specializing in Mediterranean plants. Intratuin and Gamma occasionally stock Helianthemum species. German retailers OBI and Hornbach sometimes carry it. In France, Truffaut or Jardiland may help source it. Gardenworld.app can help you locate this charming Mediterranean treasure.
