Overview

Eight-stamened waterwort (Elatine hydropiper) is a tiny, semi-aquatic plant from the Elatinaceae family, native to Europe through Russia. This delicate water plant is characterized by its fine, extremely small leaves and tiny flowers. While not commonly grown, it offers aquaphiles interesting options for specialists.

Appearance and bloom

Elatine hydropiper grows as a very compact, low-growing plant, reaching only 5-20 cm in height. Leaves are extremely small, about 1-2 mm long, appearing as fine networks around thin stems. Flowers are extremely tiny, about 2-3 mm, appearing in white or cream tones, visible only under magnification. This bloom runs through summer to fall. The plant grows in semi-aquatic environments, sometimes fully submerged, sometimes half-emergent.

Ideal location

Eight-stamened waterwort thrives in wet to very wet environments, including pond margins and shallow water systems. The plant prefers full sunlight to partial shade. For home enthusiasts, this plant must be maintained in aquaria or wet terrariums. It can also grow in low-water containers.

Soil needs

Elatine hydropiper thrives in highly moisture-rich, muddy soil with abundant organic matter. For aquarium cultivation, loam-rich substrates with sediment are ideal. The plant grows equally well in acidic to neutral water (pH 5.0-7.0). It can even thrive in very poor soil as long as water remains available to roots.

Watering

Watering is not needed in the classical sense for this water plant. Ensure the medium remains constantly moist to fully wet. In aquarium environments, provide reasonable water changes and circulation. In outdoor pond environments, ensure the plant always has wet roots.

Pruning

Pruning is rarely needed. Remove dead or neglected material as needed. The plant prefers minimal disturbance.

Maintenance calendar

Spring: Growth begins; check water quality. Summer: Monitor growth; ensure adequate water quality. Fall: Growth slows. Winter: Minimized activity.

Winter hardiness

Eight-stamened waterwort is frost-sensitive and thrives in USDA hardiness zone 7 to 10. In colder zones, the plant can be maintained in temperature-controlled aquaria during winter.

Companion plants

Eight-stamened waterwort works well in aquatic plantings with other tiny, delicate water plants: other Elatine species, Riccia species, and fine aquatic foreground plants.

Closing note

Eight-stamened waterwort offers specialists a very unique, delicate aquatic plant. While challenging to grow and not for beginners, it delivers years of aquatic interest in the right environment.
