Overview

Robusta coffee (Coffea canephora) is a coffee species native to West Africa and now cultivated worldwide. Although Arabica coffee is more famous, Robusta is certainly not less interesting. This plant is very robust and easier to grow than its Arabica cousins. With good care, you can enjoy your own coffee for years - nothing compares to freshly roasted beans from your own garden.

Appearance and bloom

Robusta coffee grows into a medium-sized tree reaching 3 to 5 meters tall. The leaves are dark green, glossy, and about 8-15 centimeters long. In spring, white, fragrant flowers appear that attract insects. After successful pollination, green berries develop that turn red after several months. Each berry contains two coffee beans.

Ideal location

Robusta coffee loves warm, bright locations with indirect sunlight. This plant can tolerate more shade than Arabica. Place it where it is protected from strong winds. The ideal temperature is between 18 and 28 degrees Celsius. In cooler climates, greenhouses or heated rooms are essential for overwintering.

Soil

Use loose, well-draining, acidic soil with a pH between 5.0 and 6.5. Add plenty of organic material such as compost and peat. The plant tolerates poorer soil than many other fruit trees, but grows better with regular organic enrichment.

Watering

Water regularly during the growing season, especially after flowers appear. The soil should remain moist but not wet. Especially after fruit appears, regular watering is essential. In winter, slightly wetter soil can be tolerated, but water when the top 3 centimeters feel dry.

Pruning

Minimal pruning is needed. Remove dead branches in spring and keep the crown open by removing inward-growing branches. After harvest, you can gently shorten the plant to maintain a more compact form.

Maintenance calendar

January to March: Harvest ripe beans. April to May: Heavy fertilization for bloom preparation. June to September: Regular watering. October to December: Water carefully, prepare overwintering. Throughout the year: Regularly check for pest insects.

Winter hardiness

Robusta coffee is not winter hardy and can only grow outdoors in tropical and subtropical climates. In temperate zones, it must be protected or brought indoors when temperatures drop below 10 degrees. Frost damage is permanently harmful to the tree.

Companion plants

In tropical gardens, Robusta coffee can be underplanted with shade-lovers. In greenhouses, it works well with other tropical fruit trees such as banana or papaya.

Closing

Robusta coffee is a unique fruit tree that lets you grow coffee yourself. With patience and regular care (three to five years before harvest is possible), you will be able to harvest, dry, and roast your own precious beans. Purchase seedlings from specialized nurseries online. A valuable project for true coffee lovers. For more gardening tips, visit gardenworld.app.
