Why create a roof garden?
A roof is normally wasted space. Gray, bare, underdeveloped. A roof garden turns it into productive green. It gives you vegetables, it cools your city (roofs normally reflect heat), it slows rain (runoff reduction), and it brings green to your home.
But a roof garden is not a normal garden. It carries heavy loads, it is windy, and it dries fast. This requires prep: load calculations, plant choice, windscreen installation. We go step by step.

How do you check if your roof can carry the weight?
This is step zero. Forget it and your house sinks. Do not forget and your roof garden is safe thirty years.
An average roof garden weighs a lot. One square meter with 15 cm substrate (not real soil, light mix) plus water and plants: 200-300 kg per square meter. Two square meters of roof garden: 400-600 kg. A full roof garden (50 square meters): 10,000-15,000 kg. Lots.
You must know: What can your roof carry? This comes from your building plans. The engineer writes "floor loading 400 kg/m2" or "5 kPa". This is the "static load" the roof can safely carry without cracking.
Many residential roofs can carry 500-1000 kg/m2. Many flat roofs (low-pitched construction) can carry 200-400 kg/m2 only. Ask your architect or builder: "What is the floor loading on my roof?" Make sure your roof garden stays under that limit.
Calculation: 15 cm substrate = roughly 200 kg/m2. Plus water (moisture 30% of dry weight) = 60 kg/m2 extra. Plus plants and planters: 50 kg/m2. Total: about 310 kg/m2. For a 20 square meter roof garden: 6,200 kg. Check if your roof can carry this.
What is the correct drainage layer system?
Water is your enemy on a roof. Ponding destroys roof membrane. So drainage is crucial.
Layer 1 (bottom): Protective membrane. This sits on your roof and protects against root penetration and roof damage. 1-2 mm polyethylene or neoprene membrane. Not optional.
Layer 2: Drainage fleece. This catches water flowing around substrate and directs it to drain pipes. Geotextile, minimum 200 g/m2.
Layer 3: Drainage or gravel layer. 5 cm coarse gravel (10-20 mm) or Styrodrain (light plastic drainage sheet). This moves water away.
Layer 4: Filter cloth. This prevents substrate from clogging drainage. Geotextile. Lies above drainage.
Layer 5: Substrate. Light, well-draining mix. Not real garden soil. Use roof garden substrate: peat-free, 30-40% coconut coir or wood bark, 20% perlite or volcanic grit, 40% compost or plant soil.
Layer 6: Top edge. Roof fascia profile that directs water via gutter to rainwater (not across roof membrane).

Which plants tolerate wind and drought on a roof?
Roof = harsh climate. Sun, wind, drought. Normal garden plants die there. You need special species.
Sedums (succulents): These are your stars. Sedum album, Sedum floriferum 'Weihenstephaner Gold', Sedum spurium 'Coccineum'. These grow in 5 cm substrate, bloom July-September, need zero maintenance. Winter over in Europe. Use these as your roof garden base.
Grasses (fine): Festuca ovina (blue fescue), Carex oshimensis 'Evergold'. These give structure, do not blow away, and colors change seasonally.
Herbs: Thyme (indestructible), marjoram, oregano, sage (gray-green). All Mediterranean, all tolerate wind and drought.
Flowers (low): Helianthemum (rock rose), Armeria maritima (sea pink), Pulsatilla (pasque flower). Low, sturdy, bring color.
NO: Large hydrangea, large roses, large trees. Too heavy, too much water needed, blow over.
How do you protect your roof garden from wind?
An unprotected roof is deadly. Wind shreds plants and dries them out. A windscreen is essential.
Windscreen type 1: Wind breaker cloth. Heavy synthetic cloth that breaks wind without blocking it completely. Mesh windbreaker 50-70% porosity. Stretched against wooden or steel frame, longest side southwest (to prevailing wind). Height: at least 1.2 meters, preferably 1.8 meters.
Windscreen type 2: Bamboo. Natural windbreaker, looks better. Bamboo screens 1.8-2.4 meters. Tight weave prevents wind blowing through. Bamboo slat size: 5-10 mm.
Placement: On windy corners. West and south usually. Set the cloth or bamboo slightly above roof edge so wind passes underneath not directly on plants.
Step-by-step
Step 1: Check your roof structure
Ask your architect: "Can my roof carry 500 kg/m2 load?" Make sure you stay under this limit. Calculate your total roof garden weight.
Step 2: Install drainage layers in order
Lay protective membrane. Lay drainage fleece. Lay drainage gravel 5 cm. Lay filter cloth. Install roof fascia with drain to rainwater.
Step 3: Fill substrate and let settle
Light roof garden substrate. Not real soil. Let settle one day so water drains out.
Step 4: Plant your sedums and grasses
Sedums at 15 cm spacing. Grasses at 30 cm spacing. Thyme between. No water immediately after planting - wait 3-4 days.
Step 5: Install windscreen on windy side
Bamboo or cloth windbreaker on frames. At least 1.2 meters tall. Set slightly above roof edge.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to water the roof garden?
Year 1: Yes, weekly in dry weeks (no rain 10+ days). Year 2+: Almost never. Sedums hold drought. In normal summer, water once a month. Roofs dry fast so ponding risk is low.
Can I grow vegetables on my roof?
Yes, in containers. Peppers, tomatoes, herbs (basil). But heavy planters (large tomato needs 80 kg pot). Check your weight limit. Better: sedums and herbs. More reliable.
What about frost in winter?
Sedums, grasses, thyme are fully winter-hardy. They do not die. They stop growing October-March. This is normal. March they grow again.
How does roof ponding happen?
If your drainage clogs with leaves or if drainage gravel mixes with substrate. So: use filter cloth and keep drainage gravel separate from substrate. And install leaf-catching netting above drainage.
Can I take over an existing roof garden?
Carefully. First check: drainage working? Substrate still moist (not dried out)? Plants still vital? Restore health with one good watering over a few weeks, then normal maintenance.
