Step-by-step
Step 1: Dig the hole

Step 2: Add sand base (protective layer)
Lay 5-10 cm sand on bottom and walls. This protects liner from sharp edges. Sand is cheap and works well.
Step 3: Install liner
Gently press EPDM liner into hole. Make sure it touches all corners. Let 30-50 cm liner extend beyond edge. This prevents tearing if ground shifts.
Step 4: Fill slowly with water
Fill with rainwater or tap water (partially dechlorinate if possible). As you fill, press liner against walls so it fits snugly.
Step 5: Add bank plants
Plant marginal plants around the rim in soil-filled pots. Iris, Carex (sedge), Mentha aquatica (water mint) work well. These prevent erosion and provide habitat.
Step 6: Add water plants
Plant submerged and floating water plants in the water:
- Iris pseudacorus (yellow iris): Semi-marginal. Frogs love the stems.
- Nymphaea (water lily): Flowers, beautiful form. Shades the water.
- Potamogeton (waterweed): Submerged, excellent for oxygen.
- Elodea (water pest): Fast-growing, good water filter.
Not too many; 50% of water surface should remain visible for dragonflies.
