How much grass seed per m2: guide for thick, green lawn

TL;DR
Standard: 30-40 grams seed per m2. Dense lawn (football, heavy foot traffic): 40-50 grams. Shade or poor soil: 35-45 grams. Too little seed = bare spots, weeds. Too much seed = disease, competition, decline. Sow March-May or September-October.
Why seeding density matters
Grass seed looks tiny, but quantity determines everything. Too little seed and your lawn never thickens. You see bare soil and weeds fill gaps. Too much seed and grass competes with itself, much dies, and disease increases.
The right amount gives you the best chance at a thick, healthy carpet. This is not a detail - the difference between "okay lawn" and "beautiful lawn" sits here.
Standard seeding density
The basic rule is 30-40 grams seed per m2 for average lawn. This works for normal garden use.
- Light use (walking only): 30-35 grams
- Normal use (family, children): 35-40 grams
- Heavy use (football, rough play): 40-50 grams
Does 30-40 grams feel light? We understand. They are tiny black dots that spread into millions of blades. Each gram contains thousands of seeds. So 35 grams = million grass shoots.
Grass type determines seed
Different grass varieties have different seeding rates. This matters.
Premium blend (English lawn, fine):
- 35-40 grams per m2
- Smaller seeds, finer grass
- Less seed needed for dense lawn
Standard blend (family lawn, tough):
- 40-45 grams per m2
- Medium-sized seeds
- Popular blend
Sport blend (Perennial, durable):
- 45-50 grams per m2
- Larger, stronger seeds
- For heavy foot traffic
Shade blend:
- 35-45 grams per m2
- Grasses tolerating shade
- Sow more cautiously (thin seed)
Note: Check the seed bag for recommended seeding rate. Manufacturers test this. If bag says "40-50 grams per m2", follow that.
Seeding density per situation
New lawn on bare ground:
- Soil exposed, little grass present
- 40-50 grams per m2 recommended
- You compensate for poor germination and erosion
Oversowing or lawn renewal:
- Lawn already present, you sow into it
- 20-30 grams per m2
- Existing grass offers competition so less seed
Repair of bare patches:
- Sow locally, not whole field
- 50 grams per m2 in that patch
- Higher because surrounding grass competes
Shade or poor soil:
- Seed germinates less easily
- 40-45 grams per m2 to build buffer
- Accept lower germination rate
Sowing timing: the season matters
Timing is as important as amount.
Spring (March-May):
- Soil warms, seed germinates fast
- Rain abundant, grass grows well
- Weeds also grow - extra care needed
- Best moment for many gardeners
Summer (June-August):
- NOT recommended
- Heat, drought, seed fails
- Grass that germinates dies in heat
Autumn (September-October):
- Moist, cool, ideal
- Seed germinates slowly but steadily
- Less weeds than spring
- Grass stronger to go through winter
- Many professionals sow autumn
Late autumn (November):
- Risk: frost before grass established
- Only if mild climate
- Better wait till spring
Best moment overall: September-October. Worst moment: June-August.
Seeding preparation: soil matters
You can use much seed, but without good soil it helps little.
For good germination you need:
- Loose soil (not compacted)
- Nutrition in soil (compost or seed fertiliser)
- Moisture balance
Preparation step-by-step:
- Loosen soil (5-10 cm deep)
- Remove stones, weed roots, debris
- Add 1-2 cm compost or seed feed
- Roll or tread soil firm
- Rake smooth
- Water well before sowing
You see now why seeding density depends on preparation. Good soil? 30-35 grams suffices. Poor soil? More seed compensates.
Seeding technique: spread evenly
Seeding density only works if seed is spread evenly. Uneven sow = uneven lawn.
Manual sowing:
- Divide seed per m2 into two equal parts
- Sow first in one direction (north-south)
- Sow second crosswise (east-west)
- This gives even spread
Seed spreader (recommended):
- Hire broadcast spreaders from garden centres
- Spread seed at preset density evenly
- Much better result than hand
Sowing tips:
- Sow on still day
- Seed must not be wet (sticks)
- Sow level with ground
- After sow rake lightly (seed partly covered)
- Water immediately (fine spray, no jet)
Growth period: what happens after sowing
After sowing, things happen. You must know what is normal.
Week 1-2: Germinating phase
- Seed swells, no visible progress
- Soil STAY MOIST (not wet, not dry)
- Warm weather helps (16-20 degrees ideal)
Week 3-4: Young shoots
- Grass shoots appear (1-3 cm)
- Green becomes visible
- Still soft, no feet!
Week 5-8: Establishment phase
- Grass grows faster
- Roots deeper
- Light foot traffic OK
Week 8-12: Healthy lawn
- Dense grass, first mowing possible
- Mow at 4-5 cm (not shorter)
- Regular water in dry spells
Prevent seed waste
Seed is not cheap. Wasting much is wasteful and costly.
Much seed waste comes from:
- Unprepared soil (seed washed away, does not germinate)
- Birds eat seed first days
- Uneven sow (some spots double, others empty)
- Seed too deep or not covered
Prevention:
- Good soil preparation (50% of success)
- Sowing net (inexpensive, helps against birds)
- Seed spreader (even spread)
- After sow rake lightly (seed partly covered)
- Regular water (seed does not germinate from dry soil)
Step-by-step: sow a lawn
Step 1: Choose season and type
September-October recommended. Choose grass type (family, sport, shade).
Step 2: Soil preparation
Loosen. Remove debris. Add compost. Roll firm. Rake smooth.
Step 3: Calculate seed amount
Measure m2. Standard 35-40 grams per m2. Heavy use = more.
Example: 100 m2 family lawn. 100 x 40 grams = 4000 grams = 4 kg seed.
Step 4: Sow
Seed spreader recommended. Manual: divide in two directions.
Step 5: Cover seed lightly
Rake lightly. Seed must be partly visible, partly covered.
Step 6: Water regularly
Water daily (fine spray) for 4-6 weeks. Soil moist, not wet.
Step 7: First mowing
Week 8-10 when grass 5-6 cm high. Mow at 4 cm.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use more seed for faster lawn?
Not really. Too much seed gives competition, disease, uneven growth. Stick to guidelines.
Keep seed bird-proof?
Sowing net helps well. Costs 10-20 euros, worth it. Remove net weeks after shoots visible.
Which seed costs least?
Budget blends 10-15 euros/kg. Premium 20-30 euros/kg. Budget OK for normal use.
Lawn thins after first year?
Normal. First year weak shoots die. Second year strong shoots fill gaps. This normalises.
Water how much?
Daily fine spray (5-10 minutes). Soil 2-3 cm deep moist. No puddles, no dry.
