Why prune Zantedeschia (calla lily)?

Calla lily (Zantedeschia) grows naturally in full leaf mass with spathes (flowers). Without pruning, the plant becomes dense, blooms less, and leaf diseases accumulate. With regular removal of faded flowers and yellow leaves, you keep your Zantedeschia healthy, productive, and visually appealing.

Prune also to save energy. When you remove flowers before they set seed, the plant channels all its strength to new flowers instead of seed production. This gives you months more flowers.

Best timing for pruning

  • May-June: Start of growing season. Remove old leaves, stimulate growth.
  • June-September: Main blooming time. Cut back faded flowers regularly.
  • October: Taper back. The plant is preparing to rest. Remove only dead leaves.
  • November-April: Rest. Minimal pruning. Many callas become semi-dormant in winter.

Zantedeschia types and their timing

Zantedeschia aethiopica (white): Blooms year-round, especially winter-spring. Prune consistently all year.

Zantedeschia elliottiana (yellow): Summer bloomer. May-September. Winter rest. Prune summer months.

Zantedeschia rehmannii (pink-red): Summer bloomer. May-August. Prune summer months.

Hybrids: Bloom time varies. Follow your plant's bloom pattern.

Step-by-step pruning

Step 1: Inspect your Zantedeschia

A healthy calla lily grows with long leafy stems and spathes (flowers) at the top. Look for:

  • Faded or brown flowers (remove these)
  • Yellow or brown leaves (remove these)
  • Damaged leaves (cut these off)
  • Marks on stems (signs of pressure or disease)

Step 2: Remove faded flowers

This is step number one. Once a flower (spathe) starts to fade - edges brown, colour dull - cut it off. Cut the flower flush below the base. This prevents seed production and stimulates the plant to produce more flowers.

Preference: Remove flowers when they are still not completely dead. This works better than waiting until they are grey and ugly.

Step 3: Remove yellow and brown leaves

Take all yellow, brown, or damaged leaves. Cut them to the base, just above ground level. This creates space and light for new growth.

Caution: Zantedeschia leaves can cause skin irritation. Make sure to wash your hands well after pruning.

Step 4: Cut back long stems (optional)

If your Zantedeschia becomes very tall (over 1 meter), you can cut back long flower stems without seriously damaging the plant. Cut them to about two-thirds of their length.

Caution: This gives fewer flowers in the short term, but stimulates branching. Only do this if your plant really gets too tall.

Step 5: Check moisture and feeding

Callas want consistently moist soil (not wet). Check if your plant gets enough water, especially in summer. If leaves yellow and it is not from age, check for drought or overwatering.

Feed (flowering plant food) once every two weeks during the growing season. This stimulates more flowers.

Cut flowers for the house

Callas are beautiful cut flowers! You can safely cut 2-3 flowers per plant for a vase. This actually stimulates more flowers:

  • Cut the flower flush below the base
  • Place in clean water with cut flower food
  • Lasts 2-3 weeks in the vase
  • The plant gives you new flowers a week later as thanks

Cultivars and their pruning

Zantedeschia aethiopica 'Childsiana': Compact white variant. Blooms heavily. Standard pruning suffices.

Zantedeschia elliottiana 'Perle Von Stuttgart': Yellow-pink striped. Strong bloomer. Prune regularly.

Zantedeschia rehmannii 'Pink Pride': Fuchsia-pink. Summer bloomer. Prune May-August.

Zantedeschia 'Captain Reddish': Deep red. Compact grower. Minimal pruning needed.

Frequently asked questions

My calla lily does not bloom - what is the reason?

Check feeding. Callas want regular doses of food. Also check light: they want at least 4-6 hours of indirect light daily (not full sun). Too dark = no flowers. Water also regularly - drying out blocks blooming.

Can I put my calla lily in water instead of soil?

Yes! Callas grow well in water (aquaponics). They love it. Keep water clean and add flowering plant food. This gives as many flowers as in soil.

My Zantedeschia aethiopica does not bloom in summer, only winter - is this normal?

Yes! This is the normal variant. White calla lily (aethiopica) prefers to bloom in winter-spring. Yellow and pink variants prefer summer blooming. This is not "wrong", it is just the natural pattern. Do not worry about it.

Are callas toxic?

Yes. All parts of Zantedeschia contain calcium oxalate crystals. This causes itching and pain in the mouth and throat. Make sure to wash your hands well after pruning. Keep away from pets and small children.

How long do cut callas last in a vase?

2-3 weeks in clean water with flowering plant food. They stay fresher longer than most cut flowers. Refresh water every 2-3 days.

Step-by-step plan

Step 1: Prepare everything

Sharp secateurs. Clean vase and water (if you are cutting flowers). Gloves (optional, but safe against irritation).

Step 2: Inspect your plant

Walk around your Zantedeschia. Look for faded flowers, yellow leaves, damaged stems.

Step 3: Remove faded flowers

Take each faded flower. Cut flush below the base. Discard or compost.

Step 4: Remove yellow and brown leaves

Take each yellow or brown leaf. Cut to the base. Work from bottom to top.

Step 5: Check stems

Are there brown or diseased stems? Remove those to the base.

Step 6: Water and feeding

Check if your plant is moist enough. Feed if it is growing season (May-September).

Winter treatment

Many Zantedeschia types go semi-dormant in winter. This is normal. Remove all leaves that die back. Water less (let soil dry somewhat first). Do not feed November-March.

In spring (April) your plant will wake up. Then start watering and feeding again.

Potted Zantedeschia versus garden callas

In pot: Prune more cautiously. Keep more leaves. The plant is limited.

In garden (in very mild regions): You can cut harder. The plant has unlimited space.

Combinations with other plants

Zantedeschia pairs well with:

  • Ferns (shade-lover)
  • Hosta (shade-lover)
  • Helleborus (winter bloomer)
  • Astilbe (white-flowered variant)

These combinations give elegant, formal garden look.
