How to prune a walnut tree: timing and techniques

Why is timing crucial for walnut?
Here is the critical fact: walnut trees must NOT be pruned during the growing season. That means no pruning in March, April, May, June, July, August or September. Only after leaf fall - October through February. This is not arbitrary. Walnuts secrete a toxic fluid (juglone) that becomes highly reactive when you cut during growing season. The tree literally "bleeds." These wounds almost never heal well, and disease penetrates easily.
Even light branch damage in summer can cause problems. A branch that breaks in August will likely rot. This tree demands respect for its nature.
The bleeding problem of walnut
If you prune a walnut in May, you see whitish sap from the cut. Many gardeners think this is normal. It is not. This sap contains juglone and other compounds that encourage infection. Walnuts lack natural defense against these infections during growing season. In autumn/winter that is different. The tree sleeps, and wounds close much more safely.
Therefore: October through February. Period.
Timing the pruning window: October to February
October: Leaf fall begins. In October you prune gently. The tree does not seal wounds immediately, but responses are more cautious than in summer.
November, December: Best months. Leaf fall is complete, the tree truly sleeps, wounds seal optimally fast.
January, February: Still good, but much colder. Ensure ground is not frozen (damages cut wounds). End February you must stop - March begins growing season again.
What do you cut away?
In a walnut you are selective. You do not cut hard like with apples. You mainly remove:
-
Dead wood: Any branch that no longer carries leaves. Cut it entirely away, back to where it joins a living branch.
-
Disease: Branches with spots, black wood, bark peeling off. These will die anyway. Remove them.
-
Conflicting branches: Two branches growing against each other or crossing. Remove the weaker one.
-
Low-hanging branches: Walnuts readily grow low branches that stick in your face year-round. For safety and ease you can carefully shorten these to where you want.
-
Dense interior: Walnuts love to form a thick mass inside. Remove a few interior branches so light can penetrate. This helps prevent disease.
But: you never remove more than 20% of the tree in one season. Walnuts grow slowly and recover poorly from heavy pruning.
Cut wounds: no sealant
Very important: do NOT use wound dressing (borax, tar, gel). This does not breathe well and disease actually grows underneath faster. Let wounds just dry out. Yes, they look rough. But they heal better.
Good pruning also helps. Always cut at a slant, roughly 5 mm above where the branch joins. This helps water drain off.
Forming young walnut trees
If you have a young walnut (years 1-4), pruning is minimal. You let it grow and form a central leader. In October you look at side shoots really in the way. Remove them. But mostly let it grow. Walnuts do not like shaping and recover poorly.
After years 4-5 you barely prune at all. You remove only dead wood and disease.
Walnut spreads poison
You should know: walnut trees (especially their roots, but also leaves) secrete juglone. This poison inhibits many other plants. Many garden plants (tomatoes, azaleas, many vegetables) grow poorly underneath. This cannot be solved with pruning - it is the tree itself.
Ensure your front garden does not have other plantings beneath the tree. Better: plant underneath tolerant species (brambles, holly, ivy).
Frequently asked questions
Why does my walnut not flower much?
Walnuts are usually not self-fertile. You need two varieties. Also: young trees (years 1-8) sometimes bear little. Patience. After year 10 a tree can drop hundreds of walnuts per year.
Can I save an old, overgrown walnut?
Gently. In October you can remove dead wood and address disease. But do not cut too much at once - this can shock the tree. Over two-three seasons you can gradually clean it up step by step.
Walnut stinks in summer when you walk past
That is the walnut flowers or ripening nuts. That is normal. Some people find it pleasant, others not. This is not something pruning can change.
How long does a walnut tree live?
Very long indeed. 100-150 years is normal. This tree is an investment for future generations.
Step-by-step
Step 1: Determine your pruning season
October through February. NEVER in growing season. This is the most important rule.
Step 2: Identify dead and diseased wood
Look at your tree in October. Which branches carry no leaves? Which have spots or black wood? These come away.
Step 3: Remove conflicting branches
Where do two branches cross? Where do they grow against each other? Remove the weaker one.
Step 4: Open the interior
Remove a few interior branches so light can penetrate. This helps prevent disease and juglone effects.
Step 5: Cut at a slant
Every cut at a slant, 5 mm above where the branch joins. No sealant.
Cultivars and variation
Carpathian: Winter-hardy, many nuts, moderate growth. Fine for northern gardens.
English / Persian: Frost-sensitive in harsh winters, large nuts, strong growth. For milder climates.
Black Walnut (American species): Extremely toxic juglone. Only if you truly have distance from other plantings.
Walnut in front yard? Careful!
Walnuts are beautiful trees, but they are large. Mature tree is often 15-20 metres tall. They take much space. In a small front yard this can be problematic. Ensure you have adequate space and your neighbours do not sit too close to their garden.
