Why do you prune roses differently in autumn?
Many gardeners think: "October is coming, I will cut my roses back hard so they are winter-ready." This is actually a common mistake. Autumn pruning on roses must be GENTLE and MINIMAL.
Why? The plant is preparing for winter dormancy. Its sap sinks downward. If you prune hard now, you stimulate growth surge. The plant thinks: "Hey! More growth? I will make new shoots!" Those young shoots freeze off in December. Damage!
So autumn pruning on roses is not to shape - you do that in March. It is to remove dead or diseased wood and balance your plant for winter.
What is the goal of autumn pruning?
- Remove diseased, broken or damaged wood
- Remove overly long, straggly shoots that wind can whip around
- Thin lightly so wind blows through - this reduces wind damage
- Leave your plant in dormancy with healthy, clean wood
What NOT to do in autumn
- NEVER cut hard back (that stimulates new growth that freezes)
- NEVER shape or restructure (do that in March)
- NEVER remove all leafy growth (your plant needs some leaf for energy)
- NEVER cut to 10 cm above ground (that is spring pruning, not autumn)
Step-by-step
Step 1: Remove dead wood
Walk your roses. Find canes that are:
- Black or dark brown (frost damage, disease)
- Broken
- Wilted and dry-looking
Cut them to the ground. This is always good work, any season.
Step 2: Remove thin, straggly growth
Find long, thin shoots jutting up from the top of your shrub. These "spaghetti-shoots" thrash in wind and may snap. Cut them back to roughly 30-40 cm. Not hard - just shorten them so they do not flail.
Step 3: Thin gently
Your goal is not to make your plant tiny, but to let wind flow through. Remove only shoots that CROSS awkwardly over each other or grow inward. Leave the rest.
Step 4: Clean shears, no wound dressing
Use sharp, clean secateurs. Wound dressing or petroleum is not needed. Roses heal themselves fine.
Pruning depth
How much can I cut back in autumn?
Gently. Do not cut hard. Your roses may be only 10-20% shorter in autumn. This is "light tidying," not "major restructure."
My rose grows very large. Can I cut it small now?
No. If you cut it small now, you trigger new growth. Wait until March. Then cut hard back and shape your plant as you wish.
What if my rose is diseased in October?
Remove diseased wood now. Otherwise the disease spreads in winter. Cut to healthy wood (no brown patches, white inside). Take the wood to the dump, not the compost.
I see young growth in October. Should I remove it?
Yes. If your rose suddenly makes young green growth in October, cut that back gently. This young green will freeze anyway. Better to tidy it now than see it shriveled in March.
Frequently asked questions
When do I start autumn pruning?
Early October, when first frost comes. Not earlier. If you prune in September, you still stimulate growth.
When do I stop pruning in autumn?
End of October. After mid-October, we leave roses at peace.
Do I leave autumn blooms on my rose?
Yes, leave them. They give energy back to the plant. From early September stop deadheading (removing spent blooms). Let blooms set seed. This signals: "winter is coming!"
Do I fertilize in autumn?
No. Stop fertilizing in August already. You do not want your rose to grow. It is supposed to go dormant.
Preparing for winter
Autumn pruning is not dramatic work. It is "tidying for sleep." Your plant sleeps for a few months. You give it clean, healthy wood to sleep with.
March is for shape and growth. October is for health and preparation.
