What is Magnolia soulangeana?
Magnolia soulangeana (saucer magnolia) is a decisive spring bloomer. In April-May enormous, purple-pink flowers appear before leaf - dramatic and enchanting. The tree grows 5-8 metres tall and as wide. This is a classic, mature tree for gardens with some space.
For young specimens (1-4 years old), early training is crucial. A well-shaped young tree grows elegant later and produces abundant blooms. A wild tree stays messy. This guide covers how to shape a young Magnolia soulangeana without losing blooms.
Timing: After bloom, May
Like Magnolia grandiflora, the best pruning window is IMMEDIATELY AFTER BLOOM. Prune in May, as soon as blooming finishes. This gives the tree summer and autumn to put out new growth and form flower buds for next spring.
Avoid pruning in:
- June-October (flower bud formation)
- November-April (buds already set)
Years 1-2: First structure
If you have a 1-2 year old young Magnolia, the task is simple: help build a good central "trunk."
What you do:
-
Establish a central leader. This becomes the future main axis of your tree. Find the strongest, straightest shoot at top.
-
Remove everything below 50-60 cm height. These low limbs only get in the way later. Cut them flush against trunk.
-
Support the leader. Stake the leader if it grows crooked. Tie gently with soft rope.
-
Let side shoots grow. Side shoots on the leader are good - they become your first primary limbs. Remove only side shoots that look really chaotic or damaged.
In year 2 repeat this in May (after bloom): remove low wood, keep strong leader, let side shoots.
Years 3-4: Primary limb formation
Now your tree grows well and has strong side shoots. In May (after bloom) you prune selectively.
Step 1: Choose your primary limbs
Look at side shoots on your leader. Select 4-5 strong shoots distributed roughly evenly around the leader. These become your primary limbs. Remove other side shoots that look clearly bad (drooping down, stacked directly, weak growth).
Step 2: Head back primary limbs
Cut each chosen primary limb back to about 30-40 cm length. This stimulates more branching in summer.
Step 3: Remove low wood
Everything below 70 cm height that is not a primary limb, remove entirely. This gives your tree room to grow and clear line.
Step 4: Balance angles
Make sure limbs do not stack directly above each other. Ideal: limbs grow at 60-80 degree angles apart, not straight up or down.
Years 5+: Maintenance pruning
After four years your tree is well-formed. Now it is about maintenance, not training. Each May (after bloom):
- Remove dead wood
- Remove crossing/overlapping limbs
- Open the centre (nothing should grow dense)
- Very gentle - never more than 20% per season
Magnolias grow slowly, so much pruning is not needed. Actually they are very low-maintenance once established.
Why can't you prune hard?
Magnolias form flower buds early. If you cut hard (more than 40-50% back on a limb) you remove many future flower buds. This means no blooms next spring. This is wasteful since the tree is valued for its blooms.
Gentle pruning - 30-40 cm back per limb, no more - is the right recipe.
Magnolia soulangeana cultivars
'Lennei': Larger, dark red-purple on petal underside. Blooms slightly later (May). Good for training.
'Rustica Rubra': Smaller petals, multiple blooms per bud. More compact. Same pruning strategy.
'Alba Superba': White with pink foot. Very elegant. Same timing.
All cultivars: same rule - prune after bloom, gently, minimal.
Frequently asked questions
Can I cut my magnolia branches for blooms?
Yes! Cut in May while blooms are still open. This is actually light pruning. Put blooms in vase - you get flowers at home, tree gets gentle training.
My young magnolia grows crooked - how do I straighten it?
With stake and rope. Set stake in ground next to tree, bind leader gently with soft rope. In one season it grows straight. Remove stake after.
How long until a young magnolia blooms?
1-2 years old: already blooms, but small. 2-3 years old: good blooms. 4+ years: full bloom.
So patience - early blooms are small but they grow.
My magnolia has many low limbs - should I remove them?
Yes, gradually. In years 2-3 remove low wood. This gives your tree clean trunk rise - much more elegant than limbs to ground.
Can I keep my magnolia compact as a shrub?
Yes, but that diminishes it. Magnolia soulangeana is naturally a small tree. Let it grow as a tree, not shrub. Much prettier.
Step-by-step
Step 1: First two years
In May after bloom: remove low wood below 50-60 cm, choose strong leader, let side shoots.
Step 2: Years 3-4 formation
In May after bloom: select 4-5 primary limbs, head back 30-40 cm, remove weak.
Step 3: Year 5+ maintenance
Each May: light pruning, remove dead wood, open centre, nothing more than 20%.
Step 4: Repeat annually
Magnolias grow slowly but steadily. Consistent light pruning gives beautiful form.
Frequently asked questions
My magnolia doesn't bloom at all - what is wrong?
Possible reasons:
- Too young - wait until year 3.
- Wrong pruning - you removed flower buds last season.
- Wrong prune timing - cut only May, not other time.
- Too much shade - magnolias need full sun.
Can I prune my magnolia in autumn or winter?
Better not. Best is May after bloom. Winter pruning is possible, but you lose more buds and healing is slower.
My magnolia sheds lots of leaf in May - is that from pruning?
No. This is normal - magnolias shed old leaves in spring as new growth comes. Nothing wrong.
