Oakleaf hydrangea: careful pruning
Hortensia quercifolia, the oakleaf hydrangea, asks for different pruning than its sisters. This is not a plant you cut hard. Oakleaf blooms on old wood, like macrophylla. But more importantly: this plant is valued mainly for its beautiful leaves and natural form, not so much for aggressive pruning.
Oakleaf is also a shade lover. In full sun the leaves can scorch. In northern Europe (Belgium, Netherlands) you need not be so careful, but in sunnier regions you must watch too much sun.
The bloom pattern of oakleaf
Oakleaf blooms in May-June with long, white flower spikes that look like hyacinths. These flowers form in autumn of the previous year on branches of this year. Like macrophylla: old-wood bloom.
After bloom (June-July) the flowers turn brown and develop seed heads. These seed heads are actually quite pretty in autumn. Many leave them through winter. Then, in spring, you remove them.
Minimal pruning: the motto
The best approach for oakleaf is: prune only what is necessary. This plant keeps a natural, full form much better than other hydrangeas. Hard pruning does more harm than good.
In spring (March-April): Remove only dead wood. That is branches completely black or not leafing out. Cut those to the healthy part.
In July-August: After flowers have faded, you can gently cut off the spent flower spikes. Cut just below the seed head. This makes the plant tidier but is not strictly necessary.
Why minimal pruning?
Oakleaf has a natural, broad growth habit. The plant becomes full and neat by itself without much pruning. Moreover, if you cut too much, you disturb the natural form that is actually the most attractive thing about this hydrangea.
Further: hard pruning means you remove many flower buds. Oakleaf lays its flower buds in autumn. Hard pruning in spring means: no flowers next summer.
Dead wood only
In spring (March) look carefully at your plant. Are there branches completely dead? Cut those away until you see green wood. Leave healthy branches standing.
Some branches look dead in April (black, wilted) but still leaf out later. Be patient. In May you see clearly which branches are really dead.
Maintaining form
After a few years oakleaf gets fairly wide. If you want him not to grow wild, you gently cut the longest branches a bit. Not hard, just a touch. This helps the form, without much damage.
Oakleaf also tends to become open and empty inside. This is normal. You can gently remove some older branches from underneath to allow light and air. This helps new growth.
Benefiting from autumn colour
A big advantage of oakleaf: the leaves colour beautifully red to dark purple in autumn. This is much prettier than summer green. So leave your plant standing until October-November so you can enjoy this autumn colour.
Only after this colour, around November-December, do you remove dead flower clusters and tidy the plant for winter.
Shade and growing spot
Oakleaf loves shade to partial shade. In full sun (more than 6 hours) the leaves can scorch in summer, especially in hot years. Choose a spot under trees or on the shady side of your house.
In shade oakleaf grows a bit slower and may become less full, but the leaves stay prettier green.
Step-by-step
Step 1: Wait until spring
November through February: do little. Leave spent flowers for autumn colour.
Step 2: Remove dead wood
In March gently remove only dead wood until you see green.
Step 3: Remove old flower clusters
In March you can also gently remove the old seed heads from last season.
Step 4: Let it grow
Otherwise you do almost nothing. Let your oakleaf grow and form itself.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep my oakleaf small with pruning?
Not really well. Oakleaf grows slowly and recovers poorly from heavy pruning. If you want him small, choose a smaller cultivar when planting. Is your plant already large, then just let it grow or plant it somewhere where it can grow.
My oakleaf doesn't bloom much. Why?
Possible reasons: too much sun (the leaves scorch and the plant becomes stressed), too much pruning last year, or insufficient moisture. Check the growing spot. Make sure it gets shade from 2-4 hours sun per day. Water regularly. Do not prune.
Can I hedge-prune oakleaf?
Theoretically yes, but not recommended. Oakleaf does not make a neat, compact hedge. It grows too naturally and irregularly. For formal hedges paniculata or arborescens are much better.
How long do oakleaf hydrangeas live?
Very long. With good care they get 20-30 years old without problem. They do get larger, but that is actually beautiful.
Do my oakleaf leaves turn brown?
He may have too much sun. Move to more shade. Or he does not get enough water. Water more deeply in dry spells.
