TL;DR

Hardy kiwi (Actinidia arguta) is a frost-hardy fruit climber that grows far less wildly than regular kiwi. In March cut side shoots back to two buds. In summer remove overcrowded tendrils. Choose male and female plants for best fruiting. With annual pruning you get abundant small, delicious kiwifruit.

Why prune hardy kiwi?

Hardy kiwi is a frost-hardy fruit climber (to -25 C) with small, sweet fruits. Left unpruned, it grows wild and tangled, with lots of dense foliage but sparse fruit. A pruned plant is structured, fruits heavily, and healthier. Pruning also prevents disease and stagnation.

March: Base pruning

In March, before buds break, cut all side shoots back to two buds (roughly 5-8 cm).

This is how you manage hardy kiwi. The main vines (usually 2-3) stay put. On each main vine you select evenly spaced side shoots. These side shoots you cut back. The two buds you leave will grow fresh fruit-bearing shoots.

Why two buds? Two buds give enough growth for fruiting without tangle. One bud is too cautious; three buds give excess growth.

June: Summer pruning

If your hardy kiwi grows thick, carefully remove some side shoots. Not all, but only those that cross or crowd.

This is not heavy pruning, but careful selection to let air into the plant.

August to September: Harvest and clean

When your kiwis ripen (August, September), harvest carefully. This is not pruning, just harvesting.

After harvest you can remove any dead or damaged vines.

October to November: Autumn tidy

In October, as the plant goes dormant, do no major pruning. Wait until March. In October remove only truly dead wood and fallen leaves.

Male and female

Hardy kiwi usually has separate male and female plants. You need at least one male for many females. Male plants do not flower as prettily, so you need few. Place them strategically out of sight.

Frequently asked questions

My kiwi does not fruit. Why?

Probably no male plant nearby, or poor pollination. Plant at least one strong male close by. Also fruits must ripen on the vine: they do not ripen after picking. Wait until August-September.

How long until fruiting?

Usually 3-4 years after planting. First the plant establishes. Then it fruits every year.

Can I cut hardy kiwi in autumn?

Better not. Wait until March. Autumn pruning risks frost damage. March is safer.

Are hardy kiwis really frost hardy?

Yes, to -25 C without trouble. Far hardier than regular kiwi.

How much fruit per plant?

A well-maintained plant yields 5-20 kg of fruit. Much more than regular kiwi.

Step-by-step

Step 1: Plan structure

In February, before March pruning, decide which two to three main vines you want to keep. This is your skeleton.

Step 2: Cut side shoots back

In March cut all side shoots back to two buds (5-8 cm).

Step 3: Place male plant

Make sure you have a strong male plant, at least 5 metres nearby.

Step 4: Summer check

In June check that it does not crowd too much. Remove only crossing tendrils.

Step 5: Harvest

In August-September harvest your kiwifruit carefully.

Step 6: Autumn tidy

In October remove dead wood and fallen leaves.

Cultivars

Issai: Self-fertile (no male needed). Slightly less productive than male+female combinations.

Anna, Geneva: Female cultivars with heavy fruit. Require male plant.

Wei Male: Strong male plant. Plant at least 1 for every five females.

Hardy kiwi: easier than regular kiwi

Hardy kiwi is actually simpler than regular kiwi. It is hardier, less wild in growth, and fruits abundantly. With basic March pruning and summer checks you get a full, fruit-heavy plant every year.
