What is Festuca fescue grass?

Festuca, also called fescue grass, is a small ornamental grass growing to 30-60 cm tall. The most popular cultivars are 'Elijah Blue' (blue tints), 'Intense Blue' (deeper blue), and 'Golden Toupee' (golden tints). The grass has fine, delicate foliage and grows compactly.

Festuca is different from large grasses like Miscanthus. It is much smaller, more delicate, and requires more careful pruning. You also do not cut it back as short. But the principle is the same: prune in March, not later.

Why prune Festuca?

Festuca foliage discolours in winter but does not die back completely. It becomes grey-brown. In April and May you get a mix of dead and living foliage. With pruning everything grows out cleanly.

Festuca feels more delicate than large grasses. Hard pruning can damage it. So you are more careful here.

When exactly to prune?

First half of March. Not before late February. Check weather forecast. Festuca is somewhat more frost-sensitive than large grasses, so make sure frost is past after cutting.

Step-by-step pruning

Step 1: Put on light gloves

Festuca foliage is very fine. Even light garden gloves suffice. Not as sharp as large grasses.

Step 2: Decide cutting height

This is important. You do not cut Festuca back hard. Cut back to roughly 5-10 cm above ground, or even more carefully: 10-15 cm. You want to keep the heart intact.

Many gardeners even only cut Festuca back 50%. That works fine if you are careful.

Step 3: Prune carefully

This is not aggressive pruning. Work gently around. Festuca is small so this is quick (usually 5-10 minutes). Secateurs work fine. Hedge shears are too much.

Start from the top, work downward. Carefully.

Step 4: Remove dead foliage

This is less critical than with large grasses. Festuca heart is much denser and more compact. Remove coarse dead foliage, but be careful. This grass feels fragile.

Use your fingers, no rake. Gently.

Step 5: Compost

Everything to compost. Very little material for such a small grass.

Festuca cultivar specifics

'Elijah Blue': Blue tint. Prune carefully (10-15 cm). Somewhat sensitive after pruning. Give it rest.

'Intense Blue': Even prettier blue than Elijah. Prune carefully (10 cm). This is a delicate plant. Careful after pruning.

'Golden Toupee': Yellow foliage in summer. Prune normally (10-15 cm). More robust than blue cultivars.

'Fruehlingsblau': Dutch fescue. Cut short (5-10 cm). Robust but fine.

Frequently asked questions

My Festuca looks very bare after pruning. Normal?

Yes. Festuca is small. After pruning it feels empty. But after two weeks it grows back. Patience.

Can I prune Festuca less?

Yes, that is fine. Cut back only 30-50%. You do not have to cut to 10 cm. As long as you remove dead foliage, it is fine.

My Festuca does not regrow after pruning.

Festuca grows slowly. Check planting hole (nutrition, water). Give compost in March. After two months you see growth.

How do I tell dead from living foliage with Festuca?

Dead foliage feels dry, discoloured. Living foliage feels green, young. Carefully remove dead foliage. Try not to touch living foliage.

What if I do not prune?

Festuca looks messier after a few years. The plant no longer grows as compactly. For best appearance: prune in March.

Step-by-step

Step 1: Choose March

First half. Check frost.

Step 2: Put on light gloves

Festuca feels soft.

Step 3: Prune carefully

10-15 cm above ground. No aggressive pruning.

Step 4: Remove dead foliage

With fingers. Gently.

Step 5: Compost

Everything to compost.

Tips for healthy Festuca

Festuca loves dry, well-drained soil. Ensure adequate gravel in the planting hole. Give compost in March. Water in dry summers (drip irrigation is ideal).

Festuca in wet soil grows poorly and becomes sickly. So plant on higher ground or in pots with good drainage.

Frequently asked questions

Can I prune Festuca in summer?

No. Summer pruning damages. Wait until March. If it really gets out of hand, carefully remove a few dead stems (very minimally).

My Festuca yellows after pruning. Normal?

Yes. Mild yellow is normal. Greenish yellow can be water stress. Check drainage. After two weeks it looks better.

How long does Festuca last?

Festuca does not stay beautiful forever. After 3-4 years it becomes less compact. Replace after 4-5 years for best appearance. Propagate with root divisions if you like.

Can I prune Festuca in a pot?

Yes. Pot Festuca tolerates pruning better than ground-planted. Ensure good drainage in pot. Prune in March.
