Heuchera: the colourful secret of shade

Heuchera (coral bells) blooms, yes, but that's secondary. The real story is the leaf. Black, aubergine, gold, silver, pink, orange — more colours than many flowering plants have. And they stay coloured all year. In shade where you'd otherwise only see green, heuchera creates a subtle yet intense colour palette.

The blooms are small, white to pink, in June-July. Birds love them. But the real spectacle is how heuchera leaves make other plants glow. A golden heuchera behind green leaf makes that green even greener. A black heuchera beside pastel flowers makes those blooms even lighter.

Combo 1: The classic shade corner

Back: Hosta 'Sum and Substance' (yellow large leaf, 80 cm). Middle: Heuchera 'Obsidian' (black-purple, 30 cm leaf, soft pink bloom, June-July). Heuchera 'Amber Waves' (gold-orange, 35 cm, yellow in shade). Front: Helxine soleirolii (fine green 5 cm) and Heuchera 'Caramel' (warm brown-orange, 25 cm).

This gives four heuchera tones (black-amber-caramel-green) plus one hosta-gold. Lots of colour, no bloom needed.

Combo 2: With bloom for detail

Different accent: Heuchera 'Obsidian' (black foliage) as base with Astilbe 'Fanal' (red, 60 cm, May-June bloom towering above). Heuchera 'Green Spice' (green-brown foliage, green-pink flowers, 35 cm). Carex oshimensis 'Evergold' (evergreen sedge, 35 cm) and Polemonium reptans (Jacob's ladder, blue-white, 30 cm, April-May).

Six months bloom (April-September) with lots of leaf tones.

Combo 3: Colour all year

Season-layered:

  • March-April: Polemonium reptans (blue small, 30 cm) + Heuchera 'Caramel' (warm in spring)
  • May-June: Astilbe 'Bressingham Beauty' (pink-red, 60 cm) + Heuchera 'Amber Waves' (gold glows)
  • July-September: Hosta 'Gold Standard' (yellow leaf active) + Heuchera 'Obsidian' (black contrast)
  • October-March: Carex (green structure) + all heucheras evergreen

Four seasons with different bloom teams but always heuchera colour.

Heuchera varieties

Not all the same. 'Obsidian' pure black-purple. 'Amber Waves' gold-orange, needs sun. 'Caramel' warm brown-orange. 'Green Spice' green with brown-red underside. 'Plum Pudding' purple-black. 'Lime Rickey' lime-green (unique). 'Marmalade' orange-gold.

No wrong choice. All refined as foliage.

How they grow

Heuchera grows stiff upright in "rosettes" — vase-shaped. This creates natural layering. First season: more compact. After two-three years: full rosettes 30-50 cm diameter. Not pushy, no "invasive".

Hardiness: to -20°C no problem. Leaves stay green even under snow. In very hot, dry regions they may recede in summer — watering helps.

Moisture & Placement

Heuchera loves moist, humus-rich soil. Water in dry summers. Full shade to half-shade for intense leaf colour — golden varieties want 2-4 hours sun. Too much sun: leaf burns. Too wet: rot.

Add compost in March yearly. No fertiliser needed; they're nutrient-poor gardeners.

Blooms & Contributions

In June-July appear slender flower spires, white-pink, 10-20 cm above foliage. Not spectacular but present. Bees visit gladly. Leave them standing until they dry — self-seed gives spontaneous seedlings.

Colour combinations

  • Classic: Black Heuchera + Golden Hosta — maximum contrast
  • Warm: Gold heuchera + Orange Astilbe — summer feeling
  • Cool: Green-purple Heuchera + White Polemonium — elegant
  • Monochrome: Four heucheras in different gold tones — subtle, refined

Frequently asked questions

Does Heuchera really grow in full shade?

Yes, paradoxically: golden varieties want some sun, but dark (black, purple, brown) grow better in shade. Try dark in half-shade.

Why is my heuchera turning pale pink?

Usually too much sun for that variety. Or: too wet and nutrient-poor simultaneously. Heuchera wants moist but not boggy soil. Watering in dry spells helps.

How long do heucheras live?

Three to five years as one rosette. After two-three years you can divide and use young tissue. Old centre rosettes can become useless — then replace.

Do they get many diseases?

Heuchera leaf rust (red spot) is most common. In moist climates more trouble. Good air circulation helps. Remove diseased leaf, don't leave lying.
