After planting: water well. After that: keep dry in normal winters. Helleborus does not like constantly wet. If soil is moist, do not add water. If dry, give.

In December-January: usually enough rain. Only in frost-dry periods (cold, no rain) add water. Then the soil feels hard and dry.

Mulch

After planting: 5 cm mulch around plant (not against stem). This protects roots and keeps weeds out. December mulch (leaves, composted wood) is ideal. This breaks down slowly and gives nutrition.

Feeding

Hellebores need no feeding after planting. They grow slowly and are content. In year three you can add a scoop of compost in March, but not necessary.

Pruning

Do not prune! Hellebores must grow. Remove dead leaves only after blooming (March), when the plant makes new leaves. Old leaves can go.
