Why cranesbill geranium is the most versatile groundcover
Most groundcovers choose: shade or sun. Density or spread. Flowers or foliage. Geranium does everything. It grows in shade (as little as 4 hours sun), in sun (up to 8 hours), flowers four months (April-August, some varieties longer), and tolerates serious drought once established.
This is not just efficient design, this is intelligent design. The same plant fills a shady corner, a sunny border, and the base of a rose without complaint.
Combo 1: The classic rose + geranium underplanting
Geranium 'Rozanne' (purple-pink, continuous bloom May-October, 45 cm wide, shade-tolerant) under Rosa 'Queen Elizabeth' (red-pink, 150 cm).
This is the perfect pairing: pink rose blooms, purple geranium underneath all summer, and overlapping tints. Less maintenance than any other underplanting.
Combo 2: The shade-corner mix
Geranium 'Ann Folkard' (magenta, April-September, 30 cm wide) with Geranium 'Brookside' (deep blue, May-September, 40 cm) and Geranium sanguineum (pink-magenta, May-June, 45 cm).
Add Lamium maculatum 'White Nancy' (white flower, silver-white foliage, 20 cm). This is four geranium tints in one shade corner. All blooming the same window.
Combo 3: The sunny-border variant
Geranium 'Sandrine' (pink-white bicolour, May-July, 40 cm), Geranium pratense 'Striatum' (white flower with purple veining, May-July, 60 cm) and Geranium clarkei 'Kashmir White' (white, May-July, 40 cm).
Add Astilbe 'Fanal' (red-pink plume, May-June, 80 cm) at the back. This is white + pink + red: warm, elegant.
Combo 4: The evergreen winter variant
Geranium 'Tiny Monster' (purple, evergreen, 20 cm), Geranium 'Pelorum' (magenta, evergreen, 30 cm) and Geranium 'Rozanne' (purple-pink, May-October, 45 cm).
Add Helleborus niger (Christmas rose, white, December-March, 45 cm). Now your groundcover blooms: autumn-winter (helleborus), spring (geranium 'Rozanne'), summer (all three). Four seasons.
Why geranium as groundcover works so well
Two bloom patterns. Some geranium flowers once (May-June), then foliage. Fine behind other bloomers. Others (Rozanne, Ann Folkard) flower continuously. Both have merits.
Shade-sun flexibility. Rare trait. Most plants want either shade or sun. Geranium thrives everywhere.
Evergreen or seasonal. Some varieties brown in winter (lovely), some stay green. Your choice.
No root competition. Geranium has shallow roots. Won't compete with trees or shrubs. Perfect for underplanting.
Design tips
Plant close. Geraniums are less dense than true groundcovers (ajuga, acaena). Space 30-40 cm apart.
Mix tints. Three geranium varieties = more interesting than one. Red, white, purple: together.
Cut back after first bloom. Many geraniums flower twice if you cut hard after May. Trim to 15 cm.
Water first year. Years two+: very drought-tolerant.
Care
April: plant out. May: water and first blooms. June-July: you can cut hard for second attempt. August-October: reblooming. November: leave dead foliage. March: remove dead leaves. Ready for year two.
Frequently asked questions
Which geranium blooms longest?
Geranium 'Rozanne' and Geranium 'Ann Folkard' are marathons: May to October. Geranium pratense and sanguineum bloom shorter (May-July).
Can I plant geranium in full shade?
Geranium wants minimum 3-4 hours sun. In total shade (under eaves) they turn green but barely flower. Ideal: morning sun, afternoon shade.
How often should I prune geranium?
After May: optional hard cut to 15 cm for second attempt. That's it. Many gardeners let them grow.
Does geranium disappear in winter?
Some varieties completely (pratense, clarkei), others stay semi-evergreen (Rozanne, Ann Folkard). Check your cultivar for winter expectations.
